I don't always agree with David Brooks, but I think he is correct here. I would add that our society has made it very difficult for people with low future time preference to make the right choices... These tend to be low IQ people on the lower rungs of society. It all boils down to the fact that we don't live as a community... We live as atomized units... Tribes if we are lucky. The inequality that we hear so much about is a symptom, not a cause, of the breakdown of community.
Money doesn't shield you from the failing of culture, but it mitigates the worst short-term effects. The problem is that degraded morals perpetuate over generations and within communities.
