The Backyard Dilemma: To Deck or Not to Deck?
Lately, I’ve been staring at my backyard like it’s a blank canvas I’m too intimidated to touch. It’s not bad, exactly—just… uninspired. A patchy lawn, a sad little bistro set, and the world’s most determined dandelion colony. Meanwhile, my Instagram feed is all perfect outdoor spaces: twinkly lights, cozy seating nooks, people sipping artisanal iced coffee like they’ve never heard of mosquitos.
I want that. Or, at least, a version of it that doesn’t require a second mortgage.
The problem? I don’t even know where to start. Do we go full deck? A paver patio? A gazebo? (Do I even like gazebos?) I started Googling like a woman possessed, and that’s when I found Dominion Custom Decks & Patios’ page on Bristow deck installations.
At first, I was just clicking for pretty pictures (no shame), but then I got sucked into the practical stuff. Like how a deck can actually create space in a weirdly sloped yard (hello, my uneven nightmare). Or how composite materials mean no more annual staining battles (RIP, my weekend plans). They even mentioned zoning for grilling vs. lounging—which, honestly, is the dream. No more smoke drifting into the conversation while I’m trying to host book club.
Now I’m obsessively sketching layouts on napkins. A low deck with built-in benches? A multi-level situation with steps down to the fire pit? (Do I need a fire pit? Do I want one?)
I’m not ready to commit yet—mostly because my budget is still recovering from the Great HVAC Crisis of 2023—but for the first time, I can actually picture my backyard as something other than a glorified dog bathroom. And that’s progress.
