With tightening immigration policies in Australia, Canada, and the US, UK universities are rapidly turning to India for student growth.
During his 2025 visit to India, the UK Prime Minister announced approval for Lancaster University and University of Surrey to establish branch campuses — a move backed by the India–UK Vision 2025 framework.

UK Universities Expanding in India
Universities such as Aberdeen, Bristol, Coventry, Southampton, Liverpool, Queen’s University Belfast, and York are also entering India’s education market.

Transnational Education (TNE): A Strategic Priority
According to Universities UK, enrolments in overseas UK programmes grew by 7.8% (2022–24).
Branch campuses in India are expected to outpace onshore international admissions by 2025 — supporting the goal of raising UK’s education export revenue to £50 billion.
“TNE is no longer a niche activity but a strategic necessity,” says Dr. David Pilsbury, Oxford International Education Group.
Investment & Infrastructure
Third-party provider GEDU Global Education has invested £25M, with plans for another £200M in India by 2028.
Their largest campus operates in GIFT City, Gujarat, with new education hubs coming up near Delhi by 2027.
The UK’s transnational education strategy ensures sustained global reach amid domestic visa tightening.
It strengthens educational, economic, and cultural ties between India and the UK, making British universities more accessible for Indian learners.
