Dmitry Starodubtsev saw his pole snapped while in mid-air during the final of the Pole Vault competition at the World Championships in Daegu, Monday night.
The Russian had cleared 5.50m and 5.65m on second attempts in the final, but his pole broke when he attempted to clear 5.75m and he was send flying awkwardly into the landing mat.
Starodubtsev looked to have been in pain after the accident, as he was seeing holding on to his left hand in discomfort.
He was unable to continue and failed finished into the medal positions. Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland took the gold medal with a clearance of 5.90m, the same height cleared by Cuba’s Lázaro Borges, while Starodubtsev was 12th.
