An almost bitter laugh escaped Jesse upon hearing the words fall from the brunette’s lips. Because wasn’t that always the case? Nobody ever meant to hurt someone they claimed to care about, that was rarely a goal people would strive for. And yet, it always happened just the same. So really, knowing that, Jesse couldn’t bring himself to be completely hate the girl before him over recent events. He had, after all, heard a lot about the infamous Lucas Scott. He knew the gist of what the two of them shared, how deep it went. Still, him showing up, the two of them spending time together, and Brooke not telling Jesse about any of it? That hurt, he felt betrayed more than anything.
He was selfish and foolish, but he considered himself to be hers and honestly thought the feeling was mutual; he was under the impression that, to an extent, she was just as much his.
Apparently, he was wrong.
At first, a huff of acknowledgement was all Jesse really gave in response to Brooke’s words. But before long, he spoke. And it wasn’t much, he didn’t really have much to say at the moment. Perhaps that would change later, but for now…
”Nobody ever does.”
Brooke knew what she did was wrong. Seeing Lucas was one thing, but not telling Jesse about it was where it turned int something PROBLEMATIC. While their relationship wasn't clearly defined, they'd been heading down the path towards something more for a while now && this? It was a betrayal of his trust. She thought it was something he'd never find out about, but when had keeping secrets ever done her any good? She hadn't seen Lucas since she left Tree Hill months ago. She wasn't home for the holidays like the rest of her friends, because her parents had long since sold the house with the red door. His visit was a surprise, but it was one she needed. Brooke finally had the closure she needed. Lucas was happy with Peyton and she finally realized that she moved on. No longer did she feel that familiar ache in her chest every time she caught sight of him. Now, a certain Treblemaker was the one to elicit that reaction. "I didn't know he was coming, Jesse!" a pitiful excuse, for she could've told him at any time of Luke's arrival. "Besides, it's not like anything happened. I didn't WANT anything to happen."
