Puya venusta

Ruth Bancroft was delighted when this clump-forming silvery-leaved bromeliad finally flowered in the garden, but sadly it was later killed in a severe cold snap in 1990. It took us a long time to get another one, but we are very happy to have it back! The intense purplish-blue of the flowers, combined with the pinkish-red of the stalks and the silvery leaves - well, it all adds up to a stand-out!

Ball mosses (Tillandsia recurvata) growing on a chain link fence. Not a moss, but a bromeliad. The dense leaves attract small critters; a ladybug in the second, and sleeping bee in the third and fourth. The fifth picture shows a plant that has lost a lot of leaves, exposing the roots.

When you think of a bromeliad, you probably don't think of something that looks like this. Bromeliads of the genus Sincoraea are among some of the strangest that I've ever seen. Almost all are endemic to Bahia, Brazil, where this one was found (one lives in Minas Gerais), mostly from the campo rupestre habitat. They remind me of sea anemones or starfish on the rocks!

Connellia augustae is endemic to Venezuela. Compared to other Bromeliaceae plants, the flowers are large and extremely rich in colour. They grow as lithophytes on the way to the summit of Mt. Roraima, very easy to spot.

#3700 - Puya alpestris - Sapphire Tower

I really should have walked back along the tour route and got some better photos of this one - not only are the flowers a very unusual blue-green with bright orange pollen, but the plant only flowers once then dies.

Originally described as German naturalist Eduard Friedrich Poeppig in 1833 as Pourretia alpestris. Poeppig spent part of the 1820s in South America and returned with over 17,000 dried plant specimens. AKA Pitcairnia alpestris and Puya whytei.

Puya is a Mapuche Indian word meaning "point". The specific epithet means "Alps inhabiting" although it refers to the Andes in this case.

Puya alpestris is native to dry hills and rocky outcrops of the Chilean Andes, and is one of the southernmost-growing bromeliads. The sword-like leaves are over a meter long have hooks on the undersides, and the inflorescence up to 4.5m tall, depending on subspecies. It's still dwarfed by its endangered sister species Puya raimondii, which can be 15m tall.

The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds and other birds, and possibly by the culpeo fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) which manages to get past the leaves to lick at the abundant nectar.

Hero Form Appearance: A combination of an Amazon queen's uniform and YuYuYu’s Hero Form outfits. The undersuit of the outfit is a jet black, which helps the main outfit’s vibrant palette stand out more. The main outfit is a solid green in the middle, but as you near the collar, lower half of the sleeves, lower half of the pants, and the tailcoat, you can see the palette shifts to yellow, then orange, followed by red and pink, and finally maroon- reflecting the colors of real world bromeliads. The accent colors are black, white, gray, blue, and violet- as well as gold and silver. The boots, gloves, and belt all have subtle patterns themed around the bromeliad. The only other accessory is a bromeliad themed hairpin in Hippolyta's hair. The flower’s petal shape can be seen in the sleeves, pants, collar, and the tailcoat.
