a/n: I'm back!! Tbh idk what this is. It's a bit of a shitty angst, I know but I'm just getting back to writing so I thought I'd start with something small. I have more planned out though, don't worry!

"I love you."
You couldn't possibly have known but those were the words that left Charlie's mouth just before you entered the room. Hence the tense atmosphere.
Apparently, you had just spared Charlie the rejection you knew the girl was about to give him. Everybody knew that she was with Brian, her boyfriend. While you weren't sure what she was doing fooling around with Charlie if she was so in love with Brian, it was as clear as day that there weren't any feelings involved. Not on her part anyway.
Poor old Charlie though was none the wiser.
It was almost amusing how he didn't know the first thing when it came to girls. If he did it would have been extremely clear that Alison wasn't the one he had to hit on. Not if he wanted a happy ending. You thought it couldn't be more obvious how you were head over heels over him but no, of course Charlie had no idea and was chasing another girl.
"Hey, guys. What's up?"
Alison was on the floor looking through a magazine, page halfway turned. She had stilled and was staring at Charlie with a rather embarrassed expression. You sat on the loveseat near the couch Charlie was sitting on.
"That's really nice Charlie, but I'm in love with Brian."
You looked questioningly at her and as if she heard your unspoken question she spoke again. "Charlie just said he loves me." The grimace on her face was enough for you to know that neither of you was going to see her again after today. She had definitely got more than she bargained for and not in a good way.
Your body tensed while Charlie's hands closed in a fist. Both of you disappointed for the very same reason but at the same time for the opposite reason.
"Of course he did," the chuckle that left your mouth was everything except amused. More like disappointed. It felt like it was the only thing Charlie had been making you feel for a while. First, he went to prison. Now, this. You should have been used to the feeling by now, but every time it stung like it was the first. Shaking your head you suddenly were more aware than before of the tension in the room.
For once, you decided to put yourself first and without even saying goodbye, you walked out.
You had known Charlie for such a long time that it felt like he was a part of yourself. So what you said about him was true, he was indeed clueless when it came to girls. But he had always been very in tune with your body and mood. So even if Alison's rejection hurt him, he had also noticed that you were distressed.
"Oi! Y/n, where are you going? You just came in." He called out to you but you didn't slow down nor made a move to show that you had heard him. Before you could exit the house, he run after you hoping to catch up with you. But of course he did, he was strong and quick.
"Just leave me alone Charlie, okay? I'll see you." You had heard him come your way, in fact you were aware of his presence behind you. However you didn't stop getting your shoes on to acknowledge him.
"What's the matter hun, huh?" He insisted. He was certain that something happened that put you in a bad mood, he just didn't know what. His perseverance was something that you both admired and despised depending on the situation. This was one where it was actually getting on your nerves. Letting out an exasperated sigh, you straighten up and turn to face him.
Looking into his eyes you wonder whether or not to tell him the truth. But what good would it do for him to know? You were just going to severe your friendship by speaking. So you didn't.
"If you don't know it already, there's no point in talking about it now." And with that you turned around and walked out of his house. Leaving a very confused Charlie behind with, unbeknown to him, a piece of your heart.
