On a light gray day last October, I donned a pair of oversize galoshes and life jacket, picked up a paddle, climbed into a rowboat, and set out on Newtown Creek. My four companions and I (split among two boats) didn’t have a set destination or an especially specific purpose. We were there to experience the creek — to get a more personal, human-scaled view of one of the most polluted waterways in the country.
Artistic Encounters with Our Toxic Waters
There are over 1,300 Superfund sites across the United States, and Toxic Sites US is a photography, video, documentary, data, and storytelling project to humanize those statistics of pollution. Designated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as areas of hazardous and toxic contamination in need of clean up, Superfund sites include former military manufacturing centers, lead mining areas, oil refinery waste, and other industrial hazards. What they almost all have in common, from the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn to the Naval Air Station Alameda in California, is they are places people live with and alongside.

There are over 60 individual exhibitions presented by United Photo Industries (UPI) in the outdoor space alongside Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, with a strong focus on photojournalism and ongoing global issues.
It’s Hard Not to Like New York’s Harborside Photo Festival
In preparation for their "Excess" project on June 15, 2013, artists Ricardo Miranda and Brooke Singer conducted a survey of restaurants in downtown Stamford to learn more about the food waste landscape. This information was then used to created colorful posters with facts about Stamford's food circulation and were displayed, along with their composting bicycle, in a downtown storefront window. During Stamford’s art walk on June 15, the artist team cycled around downtown Stamford on the bicycle, collecting waste from businesses, redistributing edible portions at a free public picnic at Franklin Street Works, and composting the remainder.
