Those stalks are flower spikes, like you see on peperomia caperata and other plants in the peperomia family. Not sure what it is though but that might be a good start.
Thanks for your help!! He had gotten the plant from his sister, who said she’d gotten it at Lowes. We went there this past week to see if there was anything that looked like it there (well, I did--he went along but I was really the only one obsessed with finding out the truth lol). There was a peperomia there that I thought looked like it, so I immediately googled it.
It doesn’t help that there are literally over 1,000 kinds of peperomia, but now I feel pretty sure that that’s what it is, after being able to compare it with one in person. The flower spikes really help give it away.
So I had come to this conclusion, but it’s still very helpful to have someone second what I was thinking! So, thank you very much.

A type of hoya plant?
I did consider that as one of the possibilities, but now I am thinking it is some kind of peperomia. Thanks for answering. :D

Don’t know what type of plant it is, but i imagine its getting a bit too much water, and not enough sun. No idea what those stalks are but since they’re finding the light, i would guess the plant isn’t getting enough. If the plant is old, the yellowing leaves may just be age, but i have no way of knowing how old it is from the picture.
I am still really a beginner, but one thing I DO have experience with is what too much watering looks like! So that’s actually a big part of why I got all determined to find out what it was. He didn’t seem really willing to take my word for it, but I thought he might be more willing to follow ‘official’ care instructions. Not that I was determined to prove him wrong or anything. I just didn’t want to see it die because someone doubts my opinion, if that makes sense.
