You and Pilot weren’t anything special, completely casual, no real plans of getting serious.
So, when he asked if you wanted to go on a days long road trip, last minute, with a friend you’d only heard about through word of mouth, the answer should’ve been obvious:
Ludicrous.
And yet, here you are, crammed into the back of a 1974 Chevrolet, Jack driving, Pilot in the passenger seat, the two of them bickering like an old married couple.
“Just pull into that Amoco, it's way cheaper there,” Pilot says, elbow on the center console. “Everybody knows Texaco is better,” Jack retorts, white knuckling the wheel. “Besides, Amoco probably waters down their fuel.” You open your mouth to say something, but the car swerves suddenly, gravel crunching under the tires as he pulls into the lot of a run-down motel. "Seriously?" Kelson adds,
The engine cuts. Silence settles, "My God, Kelson, I'm sick of your bullshit." he mutters through pursed lips, already pushing his door open. "I'm getting a room here, even if it takes a bit of begging,"
It looks as if Kelson is trying to think up some sort of comeback, but the incisive nature of Jack's words have already ended the argument, and are punctuated by the sound of a slamming car door.
Pilot tries flipping through a few radio channels to fill the awkward static that was left between the two of you, which doesn't help at all. The silence feels almost louder. With no grace at all, you climb over the center console, seating yourself where Jack once was. "Hey," Pilot starts, eyes glancing over at you, a boyish grin spread across his face, "Who invited you up here?"
"Oh, please," is all that you can get out before turning off the radio completely, "That thing makes the silence worse."
