Love: Forever Changes (1967)

50 years ago this month, Love’s Forever Changes landed in record stores and, to use more metaphysical terms, also at the cosmic nexus of the rock era’s known past and as yet unforeseen future: here was infinity as glimpsed through the Age of Aquarius’ peculiar musical lens.

That’s a load of hippie mumbo jumbo I just pulled out my arse, but you have to admit I had you pondering its profundity for a moment ...

All kidding aside, I feel that this album’s Olympian stature is only slightly exaggerated by the average, fawning rock critic, because Arthur Lee, Brian MacLean, Johnny Echols, Ken Forssi and Michael Stuart really crafted some alchemical sounds on this, their third LP.

Indeed, the band’s kaleidoscopic array of styles (psychedelic rock, folk, chamber pop, mariachi horns, etc.) is impressively encapsulated in astounding songs like “Alone Again Or,” “The Red Telephone” and “Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale.” 

Each one of these could be a micro-symphony in its own right, and even though “Andmoreagain” takes the band’s passion for onomatopoeic reconstruction (and dangling titles like “Alone Again Or,” “7 and 7 Is,” etc.) to the limit of human tolerance, the music is so heart-achingly beautiful, all is forgiven.

Ditto the charming “The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This.”

As for my other personal favorites: I love how the surf guitars on “A House Is Not a Motel” could easily soundtrack either a teenage beach movie or a spaghetti western, and the forceful acoustic punctuations of “Bummer in the Summer” provide a perfect foil for Lee’s fast-talking jive.

Finally, let’s not fail to mention producer Bruce Botnick (who was shared with The Doors and many other ‘60s So-Cal luminaries) for his no doubt sizable role in corralling Love’s acid-fueled creativity into a coherent masterwork of Forever Changes’ transcendent power and enduring relevance.
