Strange Lot- Strange Lot (Greenway Records)
Strange Lot began as Austin's (via Phoenix) Dominic Mena's solo project many years ago. After moving to Austin in 2019, Dominic (on vocals and guitar) added Cameron Martin on drums, Levi Murray on bass, and Jason Desiderio on synthesizer and guitar to create a full-fledged band. I stumbled across their performance on KEXP while looking for Snõõper's performance. Man, am I glad I did. "All I Know" kicks off with a hypnotic droning of tape manipulation with trickles of guitar and bashing beats. Throw in the 60s-like vocals and get ready to blast off with a killer guitar solo. Next up, "Always Alone" continues the spacey, cosmic vibe this time with a throbbing bassline taking the lead. "It’s Always You" slows things down a bit, but still a rockin' rhythm section carries this Spacemen 3, or maybe Spiritualized, vibe to another level. "Timeline Drops" seeps in with another cosmic guitar jam surrounded by blasting bass and drums. Next up, "5AM"' hammers in the strongest guitar riff on the album that is sure to cause a constant head nod. Would love to hear this one live. (More on live dates later.)
"Nobody Seems to Do the Math" is a slower, but beautiful, song filled with swerving bits of twang guitar that apparently deals with relationship issues. Here' the video:
Next, "Eyes 4 Ya" kicks in with a Jesus & Mary Chain heartbeat vibe matched with throbbing bass, smashing drums, and extra-echoing, reverbed guitar. Check out this psychedelic video:
Track 9, "Go Have a Dream," brings in the psych-sitar sound, that any Brian Jonestown Massacre fan, like me, would love Here's the hipster black and white video:
"The Many Faces" is a slower, spooky, repetitive marching beat with amazing guitar shreds throughout. "Hatin’ You" picks up the pace with a bouncy song with a "Tomorrow Never Knows" bassline. The album closes with "Not Afraid Anymore." It's a dreamy pop song with a capital "P." It's a beautiful way to end an album that you don't want to end. Throw in a few cosmic interludes here and there and you have the Strange Lot debut. Dominic wears his influences on his sleeves. It's no wonder his band has toured with all of their favorites. Not surprised they were at Levitation fest, either. Just sorry I missed them. One of these days I'm gonna make it there. Maybe Tim will meet me? ERIC EGGLESON
