#OnThisDay in @chicagocubs history ▸ Bruce Sutter is named the 1979 National League Cy Young Awardee. Over 62 games, the 26 year-old pitched 101⅓ innings, went 37-for-47 in save opportunities, posted 110 strikeouts, and held opponents to a .186 batting average.
Sutter became the second Cubs player to win the Cy Young (following Fergie Jenkins ′71 performance). With 10 of 24 first place votes Sutter narrowly outpolls former Cub Joe Niekro of the @houstonastr0s and thereby becomes only the third relief pitcher to win the award in its 23‐year history.
