she's turning away from him. she's guiding the aim of her body in the opposite direction, pulling the string of her bow far away. her words land in the distance. this is a restricted, careful, thoughtful person, a woman of magnitude and extensively trained caliber (he can tell from her eyes, from the hidden blade on her hip that he can most definitely see). this is both a dangerous person... and a helpless one. her pain, she professes, is lifelong. her suffering, she implies, is too grand to welcome a new friend to her side. the way carol turns from him tells him no, i'm not interested in conversations deeper than surface level — i don't want to flirt, or talk politics, or conform to the clichés of an event like this. her body says leave me be.

he obeys. bruce keeps adequate space between them. he won't push it beyond playful comments. "i understand. really, i do." in the distance, the party powers on through jazz covers of famous pop songs — bruce can hear laughter and the scuff of shoes on marble floors as they dance. he won't offer a hand to carol, won't insist upon his playboy persona. instead, he'll be himself. "i was only asking because you left the crowd in such a hurry. i noticed you." he leans on the nearby staircase bannister, watching her. "something upset you, and your face changed, and i... well, as the host here, i felt it was my duty to check on your well-being." he offers a tiny smile. "i'm not presuming anything, and i'll even go away and leave you to it. just..." his face twists. "if there's anything i can do to make your night a little better, let me know. you don't have to hide away while everyone else is having fun. pain or not."
