Bruce Pavitt, founder of the Sub Pop phenomena, celebrates 40 years as a music aficionado with his monthly DJ night Sub Popular: 50 Years of Indie and Alternative Music at McMenamin's Elks Temple, Spanish Ballroom, Wednesday, September 11, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The evening will feature underground music from the Sub Pop era peppered with the popular and groundbreaking artists who influenced it. Admission to this event is free and open to audience members of all ages. Bruce Pavitt is best known for co-founding ( with Jonathan Poneman) Sub Pop Records in 1987 to release records by NW artists Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana and countless others. Mr. Pavitt began his career in music hosting "Subterranean Pop" on KAOS-FM, the Olympia, Washington community radio station, in September, 1979. The show featured underground music by soon to be hit artists (The B-52s) and underground heroes never to see the charts (Jad Fair, Delta 5). "Subterranean Pop" expanded to a fanzine format and was soon shortened to Sub Pop. Through the '80s Bruce Pavitt continued the Sub Pop radio show on Seattle's KCMU (now KEXP) while writing a monthly column, Sub Pop USA, in The Rocket magazine. Through his years as a record mogul Mr. Pavitt never lost a taste for sharing the music he loves, occasionally DJing around the Northwest. Sub Popular: 50 Years of Indie and Alternative Music is an opportunity for NW music fans to basque in Bruce Pavitt's impeccable musical taste. McMenamin's Elks Temple (565 Broadway, Tacoma, WA 98402) is the latest addition to the McMenamin's family of venues. This 1916 Elks Temple has been restored and re-imagined into a vibrant gathering place for out-of-town guests and locals alike. The Spanish Ballroom is it's center piece, a grand space hosting live music and dancetastic parties like Sub Popular.
