A Cheat Sheet for Krita on Android Tablets (Part 3)
Part 1: Touch Interface Notes Part 2: Simplifying the Interface for a Tablet
BRUSH RECOMMENDATIONS:
The default brushes have some really nice sets, and are very easy to tune to your hand and feel via the Brush Editor settings. I was delighted to find that many of the basic brushes can be switched from a round to square head (Brush Editor-> Brush Tip -> Shape -> Square). Most other drawing programs, I have to make my own square head tip, and edit it in!
A particular shout-out to the watercolour brushes, which are some of the more natural feeling digital watercolours I’ve used not backed by a fluid dynamics system (and the sad trade-off with fluid dynamic systems is that they make my computers run like a potato). Krita’s default watercolour set run pretty well even with the larger brushes (I've been generally working on 300dpi files).
I also really like the Sketching Chrome Pen (under the default Ink set), which feels like pleasantly goopy ink/biro or a dry felt tip depending on how fast or what angle you draw with it, very fun to noodle around with.
However, if you want more brushes, here are some more commonly recommended ones and my impressions:
Concept Art and Illustration v2 by Pyteo
A good set for people coming from Photoshop, clean and focused for digital art. They run light and easy. Also a good pack if you find the default brush icons in Krita a bit distracting as interface elements – this set’s icons are plain grey and white, and blend in much better if you have the Brush Presets Docker always showing.
From Ramon Miranda, who created a lot (maybe all?) of the default brushes in Krita (and has many helpful Youtube videos for the official Krita channel):
CharcoalKA Sketch v2 Ink Brushes for Inktober RGBA-Wet (Brushes in video’s description)
His sets look very much like real media - I like the charcoal ones in particular. Fascinating to see images on the Krita forums of him using real media to make them too.
Memileo Impasto Brushes
I mainly use the first brush of this set to be honest, but it feels amazingly like blending real paint. The others can look a bit too much like what they're built on – a render from Blender – when applied at full strength, but provide ample scope for textural interest if you can blend them back a bit. Not a diss to this creator’s work – it seems inherently very difficult to avoid that computer rendered look when in the end, it is a computer rendering it. I don’t think even Rebelle or Adobe Fresco always avoid it, and the focus of those programs is a lot more on getting that analogue media look. I'd say I enjoy painting with this set as a digital acrylics/oils in Krita about just as much.
Rakurri Brush Set v2
I saw this one get recommended a lot as a beginner set on reddit, but I think of it more as a fun set to play with when you maybe need some inspiration, and are tired of your usual workhorse brushes. There are a lot of unique quirky brushes in it, that I think won’t necessarily enter everyday use for me, but have some cool effects – I really like the rainbow and liquid smeary brushes. I mainly don’t recommend it as a starter set because some of the brushes do run a little heavier; the orange tipped bristle ones in particular made my tablet lag.
Some noodling with the Sketching Chrome Pen (Pear 1 & 2), the watercolour brushes (Pear 3) and Memileo Impasto Brush (Pear 4)
Raven's favorite csp pencil brushes
Hello, I decided to put together a list of my favorite csp pencil brushes.
Analog Graphite Pencils [BRUSH SET]: These are great to build up shapes in the beginning . I love the grain on these I mostly use higher grade B variants. this is the only set that is not free. it's 150 clippypoints, but you can easily get those by just uploading something yourself to the store for free. Vant B + 4B. These are both great for line work and darker bolder strokes. My second favorite pencils, I looove sketching in these. Coffee pencil set. specifically the 珈琲Brush. nice for detailed work.
Watercolour Set by KRITZEL PIXEL This is an excellent watercolor brush set too but I will only talk about the water paper textures this time. I love these because they're pre set in the right blend modes and you can just add them all 3 right away and bam it looks like you're drawing on actual cotton paper. However if you don't feel like getting the whole set for just paper textures, experiment with the default csp paper textures, they're not bad!
Elise Colored Pencils + Color Palette Ever wanted to feel like you're a child again and drawing with simple color pencils? These are incredible fun and they will color better than any cheap color pencil you had as a child! you can layer these on top of each other to carefully create new hues. Use the broad variants for filling out larger area's and the sharp ones for detailed work. there is a regular brush tip included but the great fun is trying to restrict the color choices in the limited colors. Rob's Best Pencil: A surprise find over at the free section on Gumroad. and I agree with Rob it's a very nice pencil brush, nice round textured tip and great for detailed work, the set also includes some other goodies that can be interesting like the stipple texture brush.
Real Pencil 2.0 Michael Guimont These are my absolute favorites of the bunch. First of all the built in textures are so nice! These pencil have the ability to smoothly lay down a layer all in the same density. but also do some nice detailed work. I love building these up slowly and getting a very delicate drawing. by the end of it. if you feel like you cannot quite get dark enough experiment with the opacity graph in the brush settings. Don't adjust the general Pen Pressue Settings like the download page tells you to because that would adjust every brush you own. I tend to use these very loosely, sketch your figure, lay down a soft pencil layer, and start erasing shapes where the light would hit.
Hiiiii!! If you don’t mind me asking, how many brushes would you say you use to get this look.
thannnk you!!!
Three? I use one to sketch Then pretty much my coloring is all one brush but I also think I used the airbrush a little to darken shadows
My sketch brush is my jingsketch’s clean sketch
Coloring is the habook- square UG fine
And default airbrush on procreate
They are all free to download!
I wanna learn how to paint and render differently so bad
But this STUPID 6B pencil brush has me in a chokehold…..
Anyway gimme procreate brush recs cuz I can’t be happy with the ones I have rn
Preferably for digital painting or smth
(Also halftones and stamps….. I wuv em….)
Do any of you fellow artists use Clip Studio Paint? I do and I love trying new brushes! Are there any out there you'd recommend? I'd love to try them!
Also, small disclaimer, I'm a poor bitch since I'm STILL waiting for spousal payments (I'm not sour or anything though lol) and since I'm in school, I'm not working. SO, if you do recommend a brush, try to make sure it's a free one, please! 🙏🙏
Hope you're all staying safe!
Hello!! I wanted to drop by and say that your art is amazing!!! I also love the brush you use, and I was wondering, what software and brush do you use?
THANK YOUUU💗💞 I use Procreate for my art works and here are the main brushes I use:
The line-art brushes are already in the app! But I downloaded the coloring ones (for free) some where else.
KRN brush is AMAZING and the artist that made it has WONDERFUL artworks! You can download their brush in their link tree for free! Here’s the link to the all-star brush: https://twitter.com/procreate/status/1342034177256919042?s=61&t=Kxe-wbXZVRhLFR2oBjzqqg
The line-art brushes depends on my mood tbh😭 if I’m feeling more of an anime-ish style I use gel pen. You can check the differences in my Valentine Leona art and my most recent one, Octavinelle Cater🕺
I don’t really use the all-star brush anymore actually, i mainly use honey if I want to color something in a soft style :,]
omg i just realized i didn't post this here... i started drawing on (ipad) csp a few months ago (around oct 2024?) and i've been testing free brushes & assets like crazy ever since... here are some of the brushes i've liked using!! (wip/part 1...)
out of all of these i recommend the SU cream pencil and "barley triangle pen set"(machine tl'd) the most!!! (1st 2 images) I can't live without them anymore...
