I've had a few people ask me now so I'm just gonna make a post about it: I use Kyle T. Webster's brushes (namely, the Megapack and the gouache set). I mostly use the pastel and gouache brushes (of which there are a few variations), sometimes lowering the flow to make them grainier. That broad texture you see pretty often is a grain brush from this set, which I just smear across the canvas and set to multiply or overlay.
These brushes are well worth the money but if free brushes are more your thing, there are a lot of great brushes on deviantArt that replicate traditional media. Photoshop's default brushes also are a lot of fun to use, especially that one chalky one!
so uh I hope that helps
