Can you believe it has been a whole year since Freeform canceled their GLAAD Award-winning TV show, Shadowhunters? With over 20 million tweets; billboards in Times Square, New York and Seoul, South Korea; four People's Choice Awards; and more than $25,000 raised for The Trevor Project, the Shadowfam has proven itself to be the most dedicated (and organized) fandom out there. Let's take a look back on 365 days of fan power.
It has been a few weeks since the epic series finale of Freeform's Shadowhunters, and a year to the day that this award-winning, fan-favorite show was canceled. Our team here at Basic Stuff Magazine wanted to take some time to reflect on the past three years, our experiences as part of the Shadowfam, and the past year spent trying to save it.
It was Jane Austen who wrote, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single fandom in possession of a good ship, must be in want of a healthy ship tag." Or something like that, anyway... Regardless of what great writers may or may not have written, the Malec fandom has never been short on great writers itself, as showcased by the fact that on September 17, 2018, the "Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood" tag on Archive of Our Own reached a total of 17k works (a number that bears particular significance for Malec fans).
We've had a couple weeks now to reflect on the jam-packed weekend Shadowhunters fans had at this year's New York Comic Con, despite Freeform not bringing the show or its cast to the event in any official capacity.
The wait for Season 3 of Shadowhunters has been much longer than fans are used to – even with Freeform announcing the premiere date had been moved up from April 3rd to March 20th, 2018. With two seasons now under its belt, the series has become a well-oiled machine. Season 3 will begin with a brand-new threat on the horizon and new problems to be faced by our characters. The first two trailers have dropped and we have been receiving minor spoilers on social media regarding what to expect. We even know right down to the second when Season 3 will start from where we left off in Season 2 (it’s 2 hours 26 minutes and 31 seconds, if you were curious). Read on for what else you may have missed, forgotten or simply want to be reminded about what is to come.
Alexander Lightwood’s romantic journey has had its fair share of ups and downs. As a Shadowhunter, the uncompromising and critical military climate of his upbringing seemingly left no room for his own desires. He struggled to conceal and repress his true feelings throughout most of his early life. But finally becoming brave enough to take a chance on his happiness ended up being the best decision he has ever made. He has become an inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community as an example of a coming out success story.
Killing off a television character is a risky move – sometimes even more so when the show is based off a book series with a built-in fan base. Something that is both exciting (and terrifying) about a show like Shadowhunters, which is loosely based on its source material, is that no character is entirely safe. You may think that you know what will happen, but then a Jocelyn-sized death bomb is dropped on you; or someone else you know dies in the books is afforded the chance to live after all (such as was the case for a certain little Lightwood). In this article, we remember the Shadowhunters characters who have met their untimely ends and explore how their deaths have impacted the series. (Note: While we know that this is a supernatural show where no death need be permanent, these are the characters we suspect will remain dead, dead, dead.)

For its part, Shadowhunters is fairly quintessentially “YA fantasy,” containing many of the well-loved and well-trodden conventions of the genre. However, some of the most interesting and gripping aspects of Shadowhunters tend to arise when the show dares to color outside the lines of convention.
