~Ducky
Life should be easy. It should be like walking. Left foot, right foot. Repeat. It should be mundane. A cycle of never ending monotony. Jungkook should not have to worry about the screams that shook his core. He shouldn’t have to worry about how his nose burns from the smoke, or how his hands felt like they were melting from the hot twisted metal.
He shouldn’t even be here.
He should be in bed, cozied up with his laptop. He should be procrastinating his Biology homework. He should be normal. He’s been trying so hard his entire life.
Now, he’s throwing all of that away.
Just because he was there. Just because his dumb instincts wouldn’t let him just walk away.
He coughed the smoke from his lungs, and gripped harder on the undercarriage of the burning car. He ignored his fingers, and legs, and the screams of onlookers. Instead, he focused on the unconscious man he could see through the plumes of heavy smoke and fire.
He was middle-aged. Average. Married, with children. Jungkook grimaced at the pictures of his kids as another flame erupted directly in front of him.
This rescue mission could have been simple. He could have, in a perfect world, easily opened the door and pulled the guy out.
But no.
His car just had to slide in the freeway accident. He just had to be hanging off a cliff.
“That’s it,” He huffed, “I can’t wait any more.” He felt the power build in his chest, and for once in his life, he let it. He felt his body come alive as the strength flowed through every part of his being until even his fingertips tingled with the energy.
With a groan, Jungkook lifted the car away from danger and set it gently ten feet away from the cliff. He casually wiped the soot off his hands and froze.
The thing is, Jungkook was used to silence. He was never a very talkative person. He relished in the idea of a life that was so incredibly average, that his greatest hope was to retire alone and pass away in his sleep while he watched old reruns of Jerry Springer.
Instead, the silence seem to grab the air from his lungs and keep it hostage within its vise-like grip. It was the first time he noticed the crowd, and the first time he noticed the absence of screams. The absence of anything really. The only noise came from the distant sounds of firetrucks, and the burning car that was still an issue but not the most pressing matter. One by one, everyone started to whisper to each other.
Some were even brave enough to point at him outright. He felt his face flush, seconds before the blood drained from his face.
He had seen the man dressed in a deep navy suit. He held a briefcase like it were a child. He was smiling. Once he made eye contact with him, he raised a finger slowly and crooked it. Jungkook felt himself being drawn in by the strange man and walked over without any hesitation.
“You,” He began slowly, reminding Jungkook of a snake, “are one special young man, aren’t you?”
“Not in the slightest.”
“Oh?”
“Yes.”
“I beg to differ. Could you give me your name?” The man held out his hand like he wanted Jungkook to physically give him something. Jungkook patted his pockets in earnest, searching for something to give the man.
“Take your time,” The man rationalized, “I’ll only take when you’re ready, or when you find it. Sometimes the name you’ve had is not necessarily yours. Maybe you’ve actually stolen yours, huh? Are you a thief?”
“Of course not.”
“How could we ever be sure of that? In some way or another, we are all thieves of some sort. Never just assume you aren’t something. You are always something you don’t think you are, or could be.”
“You aren’t making a lot of sense…” Jungkook let his sentence trail, as he waiting for the man to supply his own name.
The man just smiled and cocked his head to the side.
A bald eagle.
Yes, that’s what it was. This man reminded Jungkook of a bald eagle.
“Alright now, come with me.”
That shook Jungkook out of his weird human/animal hybrid daydream he suddenly found himself having.
“Leave? With you? Why in the world would I do that?”
“I suppose you won’t be able to find a reason for your question in this world.”
“W-what?”
“Come,” The man turned around and grabbed Jungkook’s hand without looking, “On the count of three jump, hold your breath, and hum the tune to Yankee Doodle loudly. That’s the most important part.”
“Why?”
“Why? Why? Simple really,” The man shook his arm, “Yankee Doodle is an American classic. Therefore, it deserves respect!”
“Oh yeah,” Jungkook mused to himself, “That’s a very typical and not weird answer at all.”
“Enough, follow me.”
Then the man turned to the left exactly ninety degrees, and jumped into an invisible wall. HIs form melted completely with it, and it didn’t seem as though anyone over the age of seven could see it. Jungkook scoffed at that, “That’s kind of a slap in the face right?”
He shrugged and jumped into the wall, humming loudly to Yankee Doodle Dandy.
