Frostbite.

Buccaneer had always been a bit of an oddity amongst those in the military who bore auto-mail.

He was the first soldier stationed in the Northern region to require a prosthetic limb, and the mechanic that had initially been sent out by the military had no idea how to adjust his designs to fit the situation.

After a few close-calls with frostbite, the at the time Colonel Armstrong had the 'incompetant fool' dismissed and set her own men to the task of finding a mechanic in the North, one who knew what needed to be done to make auto-mail 'Briggs-proof'.

They soon found Sherman Wallace, a man who had invented  unique sort of automail, as well as techniques to keep the metal from adhering to the skin when temperatures dropped.

Shortly after, Buccaneer underwent surgery again, this time at the fort, and had a new, cold-weather automail port attached to his shoulder and nerves, this time with a rubber matting beneath the alloy to assist in preventing frostbite.

So far as he knows, he's the only person to have such an addition to his automail, and it gives him an advantage over other users of automail when out in the harsh snows of the North.

Swords

Daitaro had always been shit with any sort of blade.

Butter knife, broadsword, kunai, it didn't matter; putting any type of sword or sharp pointy object in the Bear's hands was a recipe for disaster of unforeseeable consequence. It wasn't something he had ever found issue with, however, as he had always preferred either the deadly accuracy of the multitude of firearms at his disposal, and, after being issued his first combat automail, his right arm.

But sometimes...

There were no guns, and the enemy had you pinned down without the limb that you'd come to rely on so heavily.

Sometimes you were bleeding and down and your men were still fighting, and you had to make a choice.

Sometimes it was just you and whatever you could find to make use of, whatever the enemy had left behind, thinking that you were down for the count and out of the way.

So you do what you have to.

Headcanon

He's not sure if he's in his right mind, or if the alcohol had finally shoved him over the deep end, but he's standing at the edge of the encampment, dirtied and blood-stained fingers playing over the cap of his military-issues flask, with obviously not military issue alcohol sloshing around inside, when he hears the cry, high and keening, like that of a child in pain.

His reaction is instinctual - he tenses and then begins to run, the flask still clutched in his hand as he tears through the descrated streets of the Asika district, towards the sound of distress, his mind far from Ishval as he storms past bloodied soldiers and dead bodies.

­­All he can think of is stained clothing and broken bones, of the ragged feeling in his throat as he collapsed in that damn alley all those years before, and though he should know better, he should know that its only the alcohol that's making him do this, he runs anyway, towards the sound that drags him back through the years.

Buccaneer collapses to his knees hours later, flask empty and mind nearly locked down, as it finally clicks.

There were no children left in Ishval.

Headcanon

He's sixteen, and too damn young to be away from his parents, let alone standing in the entryway to the Western branch of the Amestrian military's training academy, enrollment papers in hand and newly issued cadet uniform hanging loosely on his small, stocky frame.

He's terrified, though he won't admit it - he needs this, he can't go home, can't stay in Meinetz, he can't work in the mines the rest of his life, he won't do it, and he won't admit defeat, so his only option is a gun and those damning papers clenched in barely trembling hands.

Even the recruitment officer at the front desk knows he's far too young, but the ranks were thin and the casualties high all over the country, what with almost every border locked in battle with the neighboring country, and they needed the cannon fodder, so he overlooks the obviously forged signature on the papers and stamps his approval on the young boy's newly typed file, along with his first 'assignment'.
