Teach Your Children (and Yourself) How to Fill Buckets!

Books can be a great to introduce and engage children not just in stories but also in concepts and ideas. ‘Have You Filled a Bucket Today?’ written by Carol McCloud and illustrated by David Messing is one such example. The book has won the Mom’s Choice Awards and comes with a companion website Bucket Fillers 101 that has a lot of information, lessons and activities you can use to complement the book(s).

So what is this book about exactly? It’s about the idea of everyone having an invisible bucket. We feel good when our bucket is full and we feel sad when our bucket is empty. Sometimes when our bucket is empty we try and dip from other people’s buckets by being mean to them, but this never works. Instead we can fill our own bucket by filling other peoples! Making other people happy makes us happy!

Its’ a simple but powerful message that I believe every person should learn! Carol McCloud is involved in  quite a few books so you can pick and choose depending on the age of your child. There is also a colouring book available and a Bucket filling Journal!

How would you explain what's a bucketfiller to someone who doesn't know the story.

A long long time ago in a land called HSG people were talking about homestuck, and someone discovered that if you googled “bucket filler” you would find yourself on a website called “bucket fillers 101″ a website for a school program for middle schoolers. This school program uses “filling someone’s bucket” as a metaphor for bringing joy and happiness into other people’s lives, and if you think about it filling buckets in homestuck is actually the exact same thing (sort of, not really. I understand the difference but I think it’s a cute way to play with the meaning okay?) Now the good people of HSG collectively lost their shit when they realized this website sells children’s books with titles like "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?"   and wrist bands proudly declaring "I AM A BUCKET FILLER". It was these wrist bands that inspired me to custom order the original I AM A BUCKET FILLER wrist bands for a little less than half the price that website sells them for, and hand them out to homestucks at conventions.For those of you not in the know, in the world of homestuck there is an alien race called Trolls who live a very different life cycle than humans. Trolls breed collectively in a hive, with the queen giving birth to every Troll in the hive. When two trolls love each other very much or when two trolls hate each other very much they fill a bucket together with their combined genetic material to offer to the Imperial Drones that come door-to-door to collect genetic material. Apparently “If you have nothing to offer, he will kill you without hesitation.” which is a rather harsh treatment for any in Troll society that fail to find a mating partner.So to some people the wristbands are about filling buckets, and to other people they’re about filling buckets wink wonk and to other people it’s just a homestuck inside joke about buckets and to other people it’s a layered inside joke inside of an inside joke about the time HSG found a school program where school officials encouraged their students to "Fill a Bucket" every day.

My girls are learning about being "bucket fillers" in school from the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" And the immature Homestuck in me is constantly fighting giggles every time my girls say "You need to be a bucket filler!"

so during my job's staff training, as an exercise we all made "buckets" and we were supposed to anonymously submit bucket fillers and bucket dippers, a filler being something positive and a dipper being something negative. our supervisors read them all allowed. the best bucket filler was "the day nickleback quits being a band will be the day my bucket overflows."
