The same hallway that led to his room also led to Walker's. His right hand knocked against the door with a dull sound, the side of his fist resting there more than anything else. A moment later, his forehead followed, and he took a deep breath before pressing his hand against the scanner, granting himself access.

"Walker, I..." He wasn't there.

"John?" He stepped inside anyway, his feet following a path they knew so well. The bed was neatly made, as always... but the picture was gone from the nightstand. It took him only a second, looking around with the determination of a trained soldier; the worn Custer's Grove, Georgia cap Walker always left on the dresser was gone too. Just to be sure, he opened the first drawer, where he knew he'd find shirts perfectly rolled to save space and make them easier to grab.

He approached the armchair, sat down, and got rid of the shoes, leaving them beside the nightstand that always came with those rented rooms — though they never actually used it. “He always asks that question.” Bucky sat down too, at the edge of his bed, near the foot. He ran his hands over his face, rubbing them there before letting them slide up through his hair, pushing it back. “I think he’s always waiting for a different answer — especially since it’s almost always you sharing the room with me.” “I still don’t get it.”

His tone rose slightly, but he was alone in the kitchen. Not that his voice hadn’t carried down the hall and into the living room, where Yelena had timed the dishwasher perfectly and paused the movie just in time to catch John’s grumble.

She smiled, hiding her mouth against the back of her hand. She knew exactly what Walker was complaining about, and so did the one who had loaded the dishwasher. The others —Bob, Alexei, and Ava— were staring at her, confused but curious about why she’d paused the movie and was now practically eavesdropping, waiting for Walker’s next mutter or move in the kitchen.

She lifted a finger, signaling for silence, as if to warn them that something was about to happen.
