Always use “Said”
Please use ‘said’ when writing dialogue. Never try and find other alternatives. It makes your writing look cheap and amateurish.
The reason I say this is because, as readers, we should be able to tell how your character is speaking.
Example:
“I can’t believe you cheated on me!” Jack said.
“You haven’t been paying attention to me at all!” Daniel said.
“Don’t give me that shit! I have been here for you since the beginning!”
Daniel shook his head. “No you haven’t.”
How did you read the last dialogue? Was Daniel yelling? Was he calmer?
Punctuation is a good tool as well to show how someone is going to speak anyway. Instead of putting, ‘Jack yelled,’ I wrote ‘said.’ But we all know he is yelling. ‘Said’ is basically a filler word. We usually overlook it when reading. We know how the character is speaking. It’s when we see, “Jack ejaculated,” that we pause.
Now, if your character is saying something that you want to be shown one way, and you think the reader may read it another, I think it’s fine to add an adverb. Don’t add too many adverbs either. I love adverbs but even in my writing classes I was told to stay away from them. But a few never hurt.
Just keep with said. If you feel like you are saying it too much see if you can remove it completely. Most of the time the reader will know who is talking. It’s also nice, if you have a character who has their own way of speaking, that you know it is them when you start reading the sentence.
Anyway, that’s my little rant. I recently saw something showing a chart with ways to avoid using the word ‘said’ and it annoyed me.
