Where the buffalo don't roam
I've got a sad, strange story up at Bloomberg Echoes, with more at BoingBoing (thanks, Maggie). Human bones still rise out of the ground each spring along the Western Front, but there's no such trace of the slaughter of bison on the Great Plains just a few years earlier. There's a reason for that, and it's not because the dead were buried with honor.
Images: A contemporary postcard shows what remained after a herd of buffalo was slaughtered; buffalo skulls piled on grassland, somewhere in Michigan.
