I took 3 separate illustrations I did forever ago and fit them together into something better.

Every child of an Elder Race has no mother, 

For in their birth they spell her demise.

Ezlo is the last Blood Mage, an orphan rescued by King Gavalan before fear of the masses could spell his death. For fear of harming others with powers he views as accursed, he attempts to frighten people away with cold words and frightening dress.

They’ve all long-since realized that he can manage no harm, and his true self is one far too caring and altruistic for his own well-being. 

Guard: “The head mage? That would be Ezlo. He's an Elder Race...an' probably the last of his kind, too. He's an orphan, like pretty much all of the Elder Race children, and had it real rough because his powers are a bit sinister. The King more or less adopted him – saved his life too, from what I hear.”

Guard: “He wears these scary robes and mask, and tries to be real intimidating. Loves to think that he's scary and that'll keep people away from him – I think 'cuz he's scared of people getting' too close. Everybody loves him though. He's a bit awkward and tries so hard to be strict...but honestly you're pretty likely to hear him stutter mid-sentence than anything.”

Guard: “Ezlo's power is blood manipulation. His and others both. Apparently he bleeds yellow, and it burns things that come into contact with it. Smells real bad, so sometimes after missions he comes back smelling like something rotten and burned...It takes a lot out of him. I think he hates himself for it.”
