With Wreakfest finally making it to the PS4, I’m so glad Bugbear entertainment is back making racing games with destructible vehicles.
They’re the same studio that made FlatOut 2, which was one of my absolute favorite games to play when I was a kid.
If I had to point out a single game that was responsible for me catching a case of the speed demon, then FlatOut was it. I loved that game so much, and I have so many fond memories of staying up late at night playing the game with the volume low so that my parents wouldn’t be woken up by the rock & roll scream-o music. I remember being afraid that a monster would creep out from behind the couch, and that made me wanna run to my bed. But I was glued in place by my insatiable desire to go fast.
And boy did this game reward you for going fast.
FlatOut had a boost meter that would fill up faster if you got some decent air or slammed into people, which basically rewarded you for being a reckless driver and encouraged you to be even more reckless. Plus you could hit some really high speeds with that boost. One of my fondest memories was hitting the big 300 with a full boost while driving the largest and heaviest of the street class cars, and that was the fastest I had ever went in that game.
I love you bugbear studios.
