realized today is earth day so i'm celebrating with a sketch of one of my favorite birds: the eurasian hoopoe!!
my ornithology midterm's coming up, so you know what that means!!! lots of bird art is coming your way, starting with the paleognathans :) future studies of the orders will probably not be as detailed because i have like 15 or so more to go plus evolution and anatomy before tuesday, and these took me wayyyyy too long lol.
lowkey feel bad for the rhea and ostrich cause i did them first and they were very much rushed so now the emu and cassowaries are kinda mogging them 😭😭

here's some very-rushed sketches of the remaining 18 bird orders i have to know for my midterm today. fun fact: these are all arranged in chronological order based on when i drew them, so you can literally see the quality lower in each subsequent drawing as i grew more and more exhausted LMAO (i was drawing until 3:30 AM)
it's a shame that i couldn't spend more time on these lovely animals, but nothing's stopping me from doing individual studies once my midterm's over. plus, i'll have the other half of the orders to memorize for my final, so if i pace myself better i'll be able to spend more time on those :)

but ahhhh that's such a hard question otherwise omg. my fav would probably have to be the scale-eating cichlid because they're such an amazing example of frequency-dependent selection!! also just!! what's up with that morphology???? what!!! i love it
aesthetically speaking there's a lot of contenders. not saying that the cichlid isn't cute in it's own right, but man, leopard morays...? or morays in general?? or lionfish or oarfish??? frilled sharks with their notochords and crazy teeth!!! squirrelfish, frogfish, leafy seadragons, ohhhh mannnnnn. and there's tons i'm not even thinking of right now cause i'm putting myself on the spot. i love fish yo.
