Also jotted down some headcanon info about changelings:
A changeling's physical body depends on the environment in which they were hatched. Jake for an example is a river changeling. He has some fish-like bodybits, like his tail, and head frill. He also has pointier bits on his hooves/legs for better traction when walking on slick river rocks and also for digging in sand (the Queen lays her eggs in sandy/clay rich areas along river bottoms, and the shallow pits to house those eggs are dug by her subjects).
All changelings, except the Queen, are genderless. Because of that they don't follow common pony gender roles and if asked, they'd say their concept of gender is "Queen and subject". Subjects also being sub-categorized into workers, guards, and nurturers. All subjects can also reproduce asexually, similar to some earthworms.
Changelings were near extinction right before/during the Canterlot wedding episodes. It's why all the subjects look so deathly ill and why Queen Chrysalis resorted to such drastic measures to feed the changelings.
In my mlp hc universe! changelings were never thrown out of Canterlot during the wedding nor were they friendship-ified by Starlight later on. Instead Celestia and Cadence teamed up to subdue Queen Chrysalis during the wedding takeover and after a bunch of negotiating and legal back-and-forth, it was controversially agreed that Chrys and Celly would arrange a political marriage. The Queen getting enough love from Equestria to feed her and all of her subjects, and Celestia establishing peace with the changelings.
Overtime, when the changelings start recovering from love starvation, they start gradually taking on more colors and become more healthy looking overall. Turns out well loved changelings are absolutely gorgeous creatures and don't look like they wanna suck your soul straight out of your body.
Changelings that were hatched when the Queen wasn't love starved anymore already hatch as these new era colorful changelings. They molt once a year.
