How Jughead responds to Betty fighting for him will be what defines their relationship in the future especially since everything she’s done for him so far has lead to Jughead declaring his love for her in the Riverdale finale. It’s clear that he’s troubled, and there may be times that he’s resistant to any help that is offered to him. Yet, over time he needs to realize that this help is the best thing for him and he needs to get out of his own head.
Bughead in S2
Cole Sprouse's Jughead also had a big role to play in the finale, with his dad FP (Skeet Ulrich) still in jail for tampering with evidence in Jason's murder. FP refused to give away any of the other Serpents, even though it could have freed him, leading the rest of the gang to pledge loyalty to Jughead– something which Aguirre-Sacasa says will open up a lot of new possibilities for the character next season. "Referencing The Godfather, there's that great shot of Diane Keaton looking at Al Pacino as the door closes," he said. "That's kind of the last moment for Betty and Jughead. She's looking out, and he's put on this symbol. You think if FP was the king of the Serpents, is Jughead the crowned prince of the Serpents now?" As for Betty, don't automatically assume that Jughead's pairing with the Serpents will mean the end of their relationship. Aguirre-Sacasa has quite a few dark plans for the character, noting that a lot of season 2 will deal with her "owning and harnessing" her dark side. "Without saying too much, the idea of Jughead joining the Serpents is very provocative," he said. "Even more of a Riverdale subversion would be the perfect girl-next-door joining the Serpents, so that's something we're going to play with as well!"

It seems like we end on an ominous note. The fear Betty has is Jughead is going to be sucked into this world that has nothing to do with Betty — he might be going to a new school, living with a new family in a different part of town, he’s joined this gang. All I’ll tease is Betty is not someone who gives up easily. She’s probably the strongest of the kids. If she’s going to start losing Jughead, which may happen, she’s going to fight for him.

3. A "civil war" is coming. Betty aptly provided this forecast in the season finale, telling Jughead she doesn’t want to “let a civil war rip us apart” as he inches closer and closer to the south side. Sorry, Betty. It’s happening. RAS reveals to both TV Line and ET that the war will occur between the north side of Riverdale and the south side. Does this mean Jughead will have some tough decisions to make if he joins the Serpents during this time of war? Will there be a nice story arc about forbidden love?
4. You guessed it: Betty and Jughead’s relationship will be on the line. RAS tells ET that as Jughead “sort of” follows F.P.’s footsteps, there might be some distance between himself and Betty. A “central conflict” will threaten their relationship, and yes, it’s really too bad considering the fact that their relationship graduated to “I love you” levels in the finale.
Riverdale writers - I have just one request whatever drama you’re planning for Bughead, please let their first time be with each other. That is all.
Looking at a happier moment, Jughead and Betty both said "I love you," which is huge for those characters — especially Jughead, who is buried in trust issues. What can you say about this big step for that couple?
RAS: Betty sort of wears her heart on her sleeve and you get the impression from the character we've gotten to know in Jughead that he's probably never said those words to anyone. They certainly don't come to him easily. They're still very much together in season two, but as we saw in the finale Jughead is setting off on a different path. He's going to a different school, living in a different area of town. Perhaps most significantly, it seems like he's joining the Southside Serpents. I think that will create obvious tension with Betty, assuming he tells her. There's a chance Jughead will be trying to live a double life, one with Betty and one with the Serpents. That is absolutely a big story we're telling with Betty and Jughead in season two.
The Serpents twist poses an interesting question, as he could legitimately view them as the family he's always yearned to have. Then again, it could all be part of a larger plan to help free his dad.
RAS: I think that's the question Betty is asking in that moment as she's looking out the doorway and seeing Jughead put on the jacket. You can imagine that after the Serpents leave that night, probably Betty and Jughead are going to be doing a lot of talking and not much fooling around.
We saw a moment of Jughead at Southside High and he seemed to fit there in a way he doesn't anywhere else. For once he's not the outsider. Does he feel a sense of belonging there?
RAS: Absolutely. At Riverdale High, Jughead always slipped through the cracks and is considered a problem student. At Southside High, everything is the opposite. Jughead is not lost in the system — a teacher starts mentoring him, he discovers people who are a lot like him. He finds his tribe there, 100 percent. That will echo back with Betty and Archie and everything. A big thing happening in Riverdale, which we talk about in the finale, is the encroaching civil war between the Southside and the rest of the town. I think Jughead being at Southside High is going to play into that bigger, more contentious divide happening.

As for “Bughead,” that look of unease on Betty’s face as she watched Jughead happily put on his new Southside Serpent leather jacket should tell you that things aren’t going to be easy for this couple either. “For Betty, she’s afraid she’s losing Jughead and him going down the same path that F.P. went down,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “That’s going to make her anxious and even more worried that she and Jughead are drifting apart. When Betty gets an idea in her head, she attacks the problem ferociously, sometimes even irrationally, so they’re in for some drama as well.” But what is most interesting to note about the finale is that Betty seemed to be completely over her crush on Archie while it looked like Archie may have started discovering new feelings for Betty. Are we going to see that iconic Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle resurface again next season? “The love triangle will always be a big part of the show and the mythology,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “Archie and Betty have a very deep history. They’ve known each other for a long time and there are feelings there. They will bubble up at the worst time. In a weird way, I do believe Archie is committed to Veronica and in that scene with Betty, what he’s trying to articulate, it’s sort of like saying goodbye to his childhood and how things were so much simpler when it was just him and Betty. Now there’s Jughead and Veronica, and he did think when they were older, eventually they’d get together. It’s not that he’s in love with her but he thought he was going to marry her when they were kids. We’ll be playing that love triangle 100 percent.”
