well  i  mean. 

beard  is  his  legal  name.

it takes him three tries to turn the lock with the keys, fingers numb with exhaustion. normally, he’d kick at the door if he knew maddie was home - she’d pull him through the entry way, teasing him fondly as he got settled on the couch. but that was before jee-yun and colic; sleep was precious, he wouldn’t risk disturbing it. and it was before blood pooled on the street, before a sniper targeted anyone in a uniform, before hours of statements and details he couldn’t connect or recall. 

now, howie wants nothing more than to hug his daughter close for a second before collapsing against maddie. it’s doubtful he’d sleep anytime soon, waiting for news on eddie’s surgery, but getting off his feet will at least offer something close to relief. but whatever little peace he’ll find in the night evaporates as he takes in maddie’s stock still silhouette on the couch. 

“maddie,” he calls gently, hoping maybe she’s just asleep. but it’s too still, too rigid for that. “eddie’ll be alright.” howie adds as he drops in front of her; her face is unnaturally blank. “buck will be too.” // @buhkley

the WILDEST part of this one was him being like “i said ‘slurs’ but what i meant to say was ‘stereotypes’” as if he didn’t directly say “yeah my partner used the n-word but all our friends use slurs” like sir you knew DAMN WELL what you were fucking saying

“hey, hey - it’s okay,” he sooths, running his hands up her arms. he ups the touch helps, reminds maddie that he’s here, right in front of her, okay and whole. despite years on the job, he still doesn’t have much experience on the other side of it. at least not like maddie experiences it, alone, without a team standing behind her to offer comfort. “you know the news,” he offers with a lopsided grin, “they always make it look worse than it is.”
