The 2019 SIETAR USA conference was the most informative, relevant, engaging conference I’ve attended thus far. Being a scholarship recipient, volunteer, and presenter for the conference had a lot to do with my level of engagement and it made the experience unforgettable! Special thanks to the late Dr. Kyoung-Ah Nam and her legacy. The Kyoung-Ah Nam Scholarship made my participation possible. I plan to use this opportunity to inform my future work and honor Dr. Nam’s legacy as an interculturalist, trainer and coach and intercultural influencer in more than 35 countries throughout her career. My co-recipient, Emily Kawasaki, and I appreciated the love from Dr. Nam’s University of Minnesota friends during the conference. This conference was a great reunion of some of my MAIR & SIIC community members and introduction to new colleagues in the intercultural field. Overall, this SIETAR USA conference connected dots for my big picture and I walked away with newfound inspiration to be the interculturalist + DEI bridger of my dreams! The annual Society for Intercultural Education, Training & Research (SIETAR) USA conference serves as a forum for interculturalists from varied professions and disciplines to come together to share their knowledge, insights, and questions with other members of the intercultural field. This year's theme is "From Adversity to Diversity: The Role of the Interculturalist." I will be presenting in the area of "The Role of the Interculturalist Working with Specific Cultures." As facilitators across cultures, interculturalists can play a major role in the cultural integration process including education, career, and social development for immigrants and refugees. As an interculturalist and nonprofit leader in the immigrant and refugee community, I have identified and successfully executed a variety of roles. My session will explore the compatibility of the interculturalist in the nonprofit sector serving immigrants and refugees, give more insight into what is possible in such roles, and provide best practices on how to align skills and goals of the interculturalist with nonprofit organizations in service of immigrants and refugees.
