Prep Day 7 - Build that World
Okay... So the world-building questions that I posted yesterday. I added some and wrote the answers for my NaNo. I was aiming to have questions that would help me figure out the small things. Since the world is something completely of my own making, that means I have to make the decisions for what exists and doesn’t exist.
Here are the questions I used:
Is your story set in the real world, an alternate version of the real world, or one completely made up?
What technology does your world have? Is there something different about it?
How do characters travel?
How do characters talk long distance (phone)?
What is housing like?
Are there homeless?
What are the “caps” on magic?
What government is there?
Not the most complete set of questions, but a good place to get started on the weird small things. These are things that I know will come up in my writing.
My character has to travel between kingdoms. How does she do that? Car? Broom? Teleportation?
My character will need to talk to people when she is not in the room with them. She has magic. What does that mean she can do?
Like my awesome NaNoWriMo teacher says: You must know more about yoru world and your characters than your audience will ever know. That is why I am focusing on the weird stuff. The everyday things.
