You ditched class. You couldn't even get yourself out of your bed. The warm blanket over your head, Sol moving up and down with your chest as you breathed, it was the only thing you could find comfort in right now. You replayed the events over and over until new warm tears slipped down your face.
"Why?" You whispered, squinting hard. It was rare, but this was one of those moments you wished Solace could speak to you. You wished you weren't her voice, but instead she had her own to tell you what you needed to hear. To tell you what you could do to stop feeling the pain in your chest. You balled up and continued crying, alone.
Chris hadn't realized until one of his friends called him out on it, but he spent all day looking for you. He made sure to check every hallway, the courtyard; he even went out of his way to check the B-Library.
"Who are you looking for?" Someone's voice caught his attention.
"Nothing. No one." Chris mumbled. He made friends with the jocks last year very quickly because of his skills but sometimes he felt like he still had to come across cool to fit in with them.
"Oh, you're looking for your girlfriend." They started mocking him. He could tell it was all in good fun, but his annoyance was beginning to show.
"She is not my girlfriend." He seethed slightly.
"Chris is missing his teddy bear girl." They all started laughing. He felt his cheeks getting warmer.
"Shut up." He stifled a chuckle to play it off. Inside, he was fuming, though. He didn't like them making fun of him, and he especially didn't like them making fun of you. He felt his annoyance bubbling up in his throat.
"Guys, guys, look at him. He's turning red." Everyone from their tight circle looked directly at him. He wasn't sure what he was feeling, but he didn't want to discuss it or have everyone trying to dissect him.
"You guys are so stupid." He muttered and walked off. He didn't like what they were saying, but it lingered in his mind a little longer than he wanted it to. He couldn't help but think about how you felt tucked underneath his chin. He opened and closed his fists, remembering how his hands gripping you tightly felt. He couldn't explain it, but he wanted to protect you in case his friends took the joke too far. He walked around campus, still looking for you. His head lifted with an idea. He went to the admissions office and grabbed a random piece of paper off the table.
"How can I help you?" The front desk lady asked.
"I need to drop this off in my teacher's mailbox." Chris held up the blank paper. "It's a late assignment, they said I could submit."
"The teacher's boxes are right over there." She pointed to the wall of boxes. Chris rounded the corner and carefully peeked back to make sure she didn't seem suspicious about him. He was clear. He walked over to the filing cabinets and looked for a manila folder with your name. He only knew your first name, and since everything was sorted by last name, he was struggling. His panic intensified as he hoped to find you before being caught. He picked up a folder and opened it to see that you were in the freshman dorms on the East side of campus. He quickly scanned the admission info, learning everything he could about you with his limited time.
"You can't be in there." He looked up to see her, with her arms folded, scowling at him.
"I'm sorry. I lied. My girlfriend and I have our anniversary coming up, and I wanted to surprise her with flowers, but I didn't know where to send them and -"
"Put it back and leave before I have to report this." Her face softened slightly. Chris apologized and left. As soon as he was outside, his grin grew exceptionally wide. He looked down at your admission info paper that he had carefully swapped out with the blank one. He had access to your dorm room, your schedule, and even your personal information. Chris was eager to use this information. He walked across campus to the freshmen dorms. He earned a few odd stares, but mostly the freshmen girls were checking him out.
"Hey Chris." One of them wanted his attention.
"Oh, hi. Um, could you help me find dorm 34C?" He figured a girl trying to flirt with him would be more than willing to help him.
"You are almost there. Just down the hall, and take the left." She ran her hand down his exposed arm.
"Thank you." He shook her off and walked down the female-dominated hallway. He gulped, looking at the letters on the door. He didn't even know what he was going to do or say. He just knew he wanted to see you today. He knocked on the door.
Your tears halted almost immediately. You weren't expecting company. You wiped your eyes and sat up. You looked around your room. It wasn't neat for a visitor, but it wasn't too messy to be disgusting to you either. You shuffled to the door and slowly opened it.
"Hi." His smug smile made you want to hurl. You went to slam the door, but Chris had anticipated this move and already had the door blocked with his foot. "Can we just talk?" His voice made your stomach twist in the worst way.
"No." You mumbled nasally. Since you had spent all day bawling your eyes out, your nose was stuffed up.
"Have you been crying?" His voice was curious and dry. You tried to shove the door closed, but his foot was the perfect doorstop. To add extra strength, his hand pressed on the door itself.
"No. Go away." You huffed, still trying to close the door. Chris got bored quickly with the arm wrestle and pushed his way fully into your dorm. "Get the fuck out." This was the first time your voice held rage.
"Calm down, Cub. I just wanna talk." His stupid nickname for you only made you more irritated. Chris looked around the room and smiled widely when he saw Sol comfortably sitting with the rest of your stuffies.
"Chris, don't." The strength in your voice was immediately whiny. Chris plopped onto your bed and snatched her up quickly. You leaned over him, trying to get her back. A game you were all too familiar with.
"You got more. That's cute." You hesitated for a moment, realizing the tone in his voice wasn't degrading like it usually was. You reached for Sol, and he let you have her this time.
"Get out." You said rationally.
"I wanna talk." He was avoiding eye contact with you.
"No." You held your ground as tightly as Solace.
"Cub." He sighed. He finally lifted his head to look at you. After fully seeing your puffy eyes and red cheeks from crying, he felt it. The guilt. "I had to okay?" He was struggling to find the best way to explain.
"Chris, get out." You pointed to the door as if he were too stupid to find it himself.
He stood up and stepped toward you. "Cub, if I didn't get you to the party, they -"
"Chris, shut the fuck up." Your emotions bubbled over. "I don't care." Your tears were streaming down the path that had been paved earlier.
"They were going to kick me off the team." Chris stepped closer to you, trying to get you to see reason.
"So, get kicked off the team. Leave me out of it! Ever since I got to this college you treat me like shit. You are a fucking bu -" Without any kind of warning Chris dove down and captured the rest of your sentence with his lips. His hands cupped your face. He felt the wetness from the tears and rubbed it away with his thumbs. You dropped Solace on the floor, completely shocked. Chris's lips were massive compared to yours as they suctioned you two together. For a brief moment, you forgot everything. You forgot about him bullying you for the past few weeks. You forgot about him taking Sol. You forgot about his stupid party. Most importantly, for that brief moment, you forgot you hated him. Chris pulled back and looked at you. Once you saw his face, all your rage was rekindled within you. "Get the fuck out." You grabbed your pillow and started hitting him with it. He tried dodging it, but failed as he made his way to the door.
"Cub, chill out. Calm down." He chuckled as he was hit with the fluffy feather ball.
"Leave me alone, Chris. I mean it." You slammed the door on him so hard that the walls shook. Chris stood outside the door, getting weird stares from everyone still in the hallway.
"She is uh... on her period." He said awkwardly and left for the staircase. After slamming your door, you looked around the room. You rushed over to pick Solace up off the floor.
"What the fuck is his issue?" You said while brushing her off, even though she was hardly dirty from the fall. "What the fuck was that?" You sat on the edge of the bed thinking about him. You hated the fact that all you had done was think about him for the last day and a half. But this time, your feelings were something different.
Did anyone scream?
