Position: Matte painter and main Concept artist / illustrator
Company: BunkerVFX / postproduction and animation studio
So how can you know when it is “good enough” so you can stop making it to be perfect? I ask myself this all the time. Actually, I am analyzing this so frequently when I work and practicing myself to be self-aware as much as I can. I like to take breaks, go for a walk or watch some TedTalks. Anything that can distract your mind from subject. So when I come back, I see what should I do further.
While I was working in Bunker VFX studio on the latest project, I really had this huge responsibility as a main Concept artist. I needed to make things with quality but on time. I had the great chance to practice my perfectionistic nature. It was a huge challenge. The quote from Jake Parker “Finished, not perfect” was always ringing in my head. I had this habit to talk with more details to Supervisors, Creative director, 3d artists, texturing artist or lighters to have more info on the project to keep myself updated. I found it very important to communicate with all departments because I had so much responsibility - if the concept is not right, they will all have difficulties.
One more skill has come to expression: organization. Just for fun and with no pressure I was making some presentations and boards with references, because I was use to explain myself that way the idea of the whole concept. It turned out to be such a great plan for the whole community. Everybody could find references for themselves. I didn’t had that intention, but it turned much better than I expected.
I have also learned so much about responsibility, the way project pipelines work for making a trailer for a game, some new tips in communication and how to develop my skills, but also how to work in creative community. This was the longest project where I was a part of such a big community, but also the first position with such high level of responsibility.
The result is positive. We made it as a team. Some people are more, some less skilled. Some are my role models. But they are all good people, and besides the amount of experience and knowledge I got from this time participating in Bunker, I also had much fun and made friends. So glad it turned out this way!
