I was thinking of buying some seeds to plant in some small pots, do you have any recommendations for good plants to grow? Also is coffee grinds and egg shells really good for plants?
I have a few personal favorites that are always my go to’s!
🌻If you’re looking for good flowers to grow I suggest: Sweet Peas, Sun flowers, Phlox, Periwinkles, Marigolds, or Zinnias! For me these are hardy, fast growers and add a fun pop of color.
🌿Good herbs to grow: I’ve had best luck with Mint, Basil, Lemongrass, Lemon verbena, Rosemary, and Lavender. I use all of these to make my own tea blends!
🌱and if you’re thinking vegetables I definitely would suggest: Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. These are the ones I tend to grow in pots on my patio!
As for your question about Coffee and Egg shells: They can be! Coffee grounds are used by some as a slow release fertilizer or even mulch, it has a high content of nitrogen which is very important for plant growth! It’s also beneficial to organisms like Earthworms and bacteria that in turn aid the soil and plants. I’ve had some people tell me they use it as a way to increase soil acidity. But this, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t an exact science because too many variables play into what effects pH levels. If you’re interested in it at all you can try out Starbucks ‘Grounds for Your Garden’ program they do! With eggshells, you can crush them and till them into your soil and slowly (think months) they’ll break down and be a source of Calcium for your plants! Which is important for healthy, strong plants. I know some suggest to use them to repel slugs and such but I’ve never found that to work personally.I also save the water I boil my pasta in and use it the next day to water my plants, (so long as it’s not been salted) because it’s rich in starch!Happy planting my friend! 🌹
