No IDs needed for these guys, just wanted to share the INCREDIBLE beetles I found up in Glacier National Park. Two of them were buprestids, which are a favorite of mine and a first for me to find in the wild!
-Yellow-spotted jewel beetle, Buprestis confluenta (Landed on the picnic table I was sitting at, stayed JUST long enough for the photo.)
-Flat-headed poplar borer, Dicerca tenebra (Chilling near the top of a porch support on a cabin while I was washing dishes, I had to practically climb the railing to get them. Had absolutely 0 reaction to being grabbed)
-Green blister beetle, Lytta stygica (Handling something capable of giving me chemical burns was NOT intentional, it crawled onto my hand when I moved its flower for a better shot)
-Sapphire-winged click beetle, Selatosomus aeripennis (10/10 no notes absolutely stunning, politely refrained from flinging themself into the void when picked up)
What a beautiful bunch of beetles! I'm also a big fan of buprestids and so rarely see them. I think my fav here is the click beetle :) May be Selatosomus semimetallicus, though? Same genus either way
@clusterkriff submitted: Found these big babies inside a rotten log in [removed] in January of this year. Pls don’t post location. After viewing, they were placed back in their log!
These precious large-headed children are jewel beetle larvae in the family Buprestidae! Couldn’t say which species at this stage, though.
@your-neighbor-bear submitted: This little guy landed on me. Seemed awful friendly. Tried to get some good photos for ID. Found in East/North East Texas :]
A cutie pie!!! It's a kind of jewel beetle called a sculptured pine borer :)
@wapato-sprout submitted: Saved this beauty while out paddleboarding today! We thought it died from the salt water, but it started moving on the car ride home! The underside of its abdomen is metallic, too.
Found on Southern Vancouver Island!
Oooooo very sparkly. Glad they didn't perish in the water! It's definitely a jewel beetle, likely a western cedar borer.
