Regular faunus AU here we go~
Yang had a scarf that had belonged to Summer.
It was an old thing now; faded and worn, and it didn’t evencarry her scent anymore. When Yang had been little, back when her mother’sdeath had been fresh and aching, she had taken that scarf out and wrappedherself up in it just to smell her again. No human could smell the scent thathad lingered, but that was the beauty of being a lion faunus.
She’d held on to it for years since then, and sometimes shefelt guilty for that; Summer was Ruby’s mother by blood, and in all rights thescarf should have gone to her as a last token of her mother. But Ruby had neverasked for it, and so Yang had held on to it. She’d kept it close at home, andwhen she had gotten accepted into Beacon she had brought it along with her—a comfortitem, just in case.
It had seemed silly at the time, but she had even brought itwith her after she and Weiss had married—officially, of course, for theirfriends and family, there was no need to hide their relationship now that KaltSchnee was dead and the white wolf faunus had inherited properly—and for themost part, she had kept it tucked away somewhere safe. She’d been so happy andcontent lately, she hadn’t felt the urge to pull it out.
Until now, anyway.
Yang inhaled deeply, closing her eyes as her ears flicked back.Summer’s scent had long since faded, and the fabric was fragile now. She had tobe careful with her claws; they would surely rip the piece of clothing toshreds now. She probably shouldn’t have even been touching it at this point, but she’d needed the comfort. She’d needed the mental image, the memory, ofSummer wearing this when she went out in the cold or away on hunts. She’dneeded the memory of Summer wrapping her up in it to make her giggle when humanchildren had been cruel.
She’d needed the memory of her mother, because the goldenlion had learned today that she was going to be a mother herself. Not just toone life, either—four tiny lives, made from the love she shared with Weiss, were growing inside of her right now.
That had been a shock. They’d only expected one, even ifYang could admit to herself she’d always wanted a large family. A quirk oftheir faunus genetics, perhaps; wolves and lions did tend to have largelitters, if one wanted to apply animalistic traits to the pair of them. Whatmattered, though, was Yang was going to be a mother.
She was going to be a mother, and her mother wasn’t alive tosee it.
It had hit her gradually, once she and Weiss had gottenhome. She hadn’t said anything about it; Eve was dead as well, and there was noreason to heap grief on top of grief. So she had made her way to their bedroomwith Summer’s scarf, curled up in the pillows with it carefully wrapped aroundher, and had stayed like that ever since. She didn’t know how much time hadpassed.
Honestly, she might have even fallen asleep. Learning shewas pregnant with four was oddly exhausting.
She woke up feeling warm, and when she breathed in shesmelled mint and vanilla. She smiled despite herself, gently shifting her handto find white wolf ears. “Hey,” she murmured.”
Nuzzled into her neck, one arm draped gently over her waist,Weiss sighed. “Did I wake you up?”
“Nah, snowflake, it was a light nap anyway. Only closed myeyes for a second, I promise.”
Weiss shifted a little, nudging gently into the scarf Yangwore. “I’ve never seen you wear this before. It smells nice.”
Yang chuckled, rubbing her wife’s ears. “You’re only sayin’that because it smells like me. It’s not mine, it used to be Summer’s. I just…dragged it out. Used to wear it all the time when I was a kid, and I wanted itnow.”
The white wolf was quiet for a moment, before she nodded. “Imissed my mom, too.”
“… Yeah, I know. God, we’re a pair, aren’t we? We should behappy about this, and instead we’re both sad because of our moms.”
“Do you think that’s normal?”
The lion shrugged. “Who knows? We’ll have to ask Blake whenshe and Ruby decide to have kids, she has a mom.”
Weiss snorted, “Comforting.”
“Hey, it’s true! Blake’s the only one of us with a livingmom. We can ask her.”
“Morbid.”
“Hey.” Yang nuzzled into Weiss’s ears. “I’m not wrong. Andit’s lightening the mood a little bit, see? I got you to smile a little bit.”
“… I am, but what about you? Are you okay?”
The blonde sighed after a moment, playing with the scarf. “Iwill be. I’m just…. This is a lot. We’re going to be moms, Weiss. We’re goingto be moms to four kids all at once. I don’t know what to expect. I’m excited, but a little overwhelmed thinking about it.”
Weiss thought about that for a moment, then nuzzled into thescarf around Yang’s neck and breathed her in. “I love you,” she said at last. “Andto be honest, I’m a little overwhelmed too. But I’m excited. So… we’re bothoverwhelmed and excited, I think is the point I’m making here.”
Yang smiled. “We aren’t alone in this?”
“No. We have Blake and Ruby and the rest of our friends andfamily, and we have each other. Even if we’re both a little sad right now.”
“… Well.” Yang pressed a kiss to Weiss’s ears. “I love youtoo, ice queen. And guess what?”
Weiss smiled up at her. “What?”
“We’re going to have a family. And now that you’re here andthe sadness is passing a bit?” Yang tilted Weiss’s face up to kiss her on thelips, and she was smiling.
“Now I’m feeling reallyexcited.”
