i’m sure we all have similar stories but being black has always been something of a plight for me. ever since elementary school people—from adults to peers—have given me grief for the way i talk, my clothing style, the fact that i like to read, my hair, my mom’s lighter skin tone (“are you adopted? is that why you’re the way you are?”), and many other trivial things, claiming that these things made me “less” black or an “anomaly” in the black community. because of this, i never felt comfortable being black. i literally hated my skin for years and wished desperately to wake up one day white. thankfully, with the help of tumblr, literature, teachers, and friends, i’ve begun to recognize how amazing it is to be black, how much it means and how much history i have to be thankful for. today, i’m proud to be black. i’m happy to be black. i hope the rest of us can say the same. happy blackout!!! 😊 [they/them/their please!!!]
