Burt's Trans Lux Restaurant by StreetsofWashington Via Flickr: Burt Lopatin (1906-1982), an immigrant from Russia, operated Burt’s Trans Lux Restaurant in the Art Deco-styled Trans Lux Theater at 14th Street and New York Avenue NW during the World War II years. The Trans Lux included studios for the National Broadcasting Corporation, thus earning it the Radio City moniker, like its larger sister site in New York. After watching a newsreel of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, you could stop for refreshments at Burt's. Dinner started at 75 cents and included live entertainment. In the 1950s, Lopatin transitioned from the restaurant business to real estate in Alexandria, where he served as chair of the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals into the 1960s.
