The RTÉ Archives currently host 4 different videos of life at St. Brides in the 1980s. Early Dinner at the Lobster Pot in Burtonport
I managed to land a spot in the ferry heading back to Burtonport. I intended to leave Aranmore Island later in the day but I finished sooner. Fortunately, there was just enough room on the ferry for my car. It was a very tight squeeze and made even more difficult because you were reversing up into the ferry. No vehicles were scratched here just make sure the handbrake is engaged. The ride back to Burtonport was uneventful. I was tired from all that exploring that I didn't get to enjoy the view from the ferry.

Leaving Aranmore Island
Upon visiting Aranmore Island, I realize the reason why people have left the island to live elsewhere. It is too far, too isolated from everything else in Ireland. Internet connection is spotty in places and there wasn't even a supermarket. That is life today. It was more difficult back then without modern conveniences. However, I can see the allure of Aranmore. While the landscape can be quite hostile in some places. There are places which a mindblowingly beautiful. To me, Aranmore is a microcosm of Ireland all in a small package. Visitors would be wrong to give this charming island a miss.

Sailing from Burtonport to Aranmore Island
It has been years since I last boarded a ship. The last one was a trip to Skelling Michael down in county Kerry, though I would hardly call that boat a ship. I never enjoyed riding boats here in Ireland. Quite a number of times, the destinations would out at sea, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. In all times, the ride was extremely rough, enough to make your throw up your lunch. Fortunately, I don't get seasick however, that doesn't make the ride any less scary. I was preparing for the worst for this ferry ride to Aranmore Island.

Taking the Ferry from Burtonport to Aranmore Island
It isn't my first time taking a ferry in Ireland. I have taken a boat here in the country but that was more on a visit to Tory Island. It wasn't a ship that was capable of ferrying vehicles as this one is. The ride is supposed to a short one since Aranmore Island isn't that far away. Before we left port, I managed to have a look at the bridge where everything happens. It wasn't that fancy actually. It was just a small room which has a real helm. I can't recall if I have ever seen one of these things on a real ship. I always thought that these belonged to older boats. It is a surprise to see in use.

Ferry to Aranmore Island
On a whim, I decided to visit Aranmore Island off the coast of county Donegal. I had to drive all the way to the village of Burtonport to catch a ferry to the island. I debated on bringing the car to the island but laziness won out in the end. In hindsight, I think it was a good call to bring the car. I won't be as tired and I would be able to see more. As the name implies, Burtonport is a port and the main gateway to Aranmore Island. There are regular ferries which go to the island with or without vehicles.
