Bus adventures

Maybe I should do this in Finnish as practice, idk, but I’m too tired for it. I’ll use it during my speaking practice tomorrow.

I’ve been going to the office for 3 months now so lots of interesting/funny/weird experiences on public transport. Here are a few examples:

Woman asking the driver to open door. Driver grumbling that it is going to open, then continuing after she got off and complaining to the other passengers that ppl think bus drivers are stupid.

Bus driver helping people use the ticket machine / advising foreigners where they can buy a ticket and waiting for them to return.

Old guy falling over because the bus started too quickly but also he was taking a lot of time to sit down. Luckily he knew the driver so he kinda joked about it. The next day he somewhat proudly tells this adventure to someone.

A mom with a pram getting on the bus (with my help bc I was the only other passenger) while interviewing the driver where the bus actually goes. Two minutes later changes her mind so I have to help her get off.

Driver can’t communicate with foreigner about broken ticket machine so just says “kaputt”. (”broken” in German, kinda used in Hungarian)

Funny driver who jokes with the passengers and their failure to use the ticket machine correctly.

Driver listening to music clearly on Spotify, as an ad comes on (luckily the whole bus didn’t hear this, I was standing at the front)

Older lady complaining that schoolkids occupy all the seats. The next day another older lady asks ME if I wanna sit.

Sometimes listening to the passengers is fun too. The same kids go to school with my bus every day and talking about school and their crushes etc. :D

I can’t think of any more right now, but I’ll continue...

Bus and train adventure, and etc.

I went on an adventure yesterday! (Actually it was more of a quest, since I had a goal)

First, I took my car to the shop.  It needs a timing belt and head gaskets.  I am 100% okay with this, because Subaru.  Preventative maintenance now will get me a few more years of driving Sir Percival the Steadfast. (That’s the car’s name. Who else here names cars?)  Anyway, Percy’s still in the shop, he should be done sometime today.

I also had to get my hearing aid fixed. FINALLY.  But I was on the west side of the metro area, and the audiologist’s office is on the east side of the metro area.  It’s a 30-minute drive...which, with our public transit system, means at least two hours on the bus. >_<

Somewhere between the first and second buses, I realized...”Oh crap, I have a splitting 5/10 headache.”  I took a muscle relaxer. Didn’t touch it.

The third bus was The Scary Bus.  Does every city have one of these?  It’s the bus that goes through the “bad” part of town, the infamous bus, the one where all the crazy shit goes down.  Because The Scary Bus stops right by work and my doctors’ offices, I take it fairly often.  It’s usually mellow.  Yesterday, it wasn’t.  A disagreement turned into an altercation, which turned into people threatening to shoot each other. I peaced out the back door and waited for the next bus.  I rarely fear for my safety on the bus, but this time, I did.

I got some ibuprofen for my headache at the pharmacy (also didn’t touch it), got my hearing aid fixed (yay! finally!) and found that the best route back would put me on the train. NICE.  So I got to take a bus I’d never taken before.  And I got to go through the hipster part of town, which is only worth mentioning because of how many cute dogs I saw on that ride.  I got to pet a dog on the walk home, too! :D

It was a 10k+ step day, and when I got home, I finally got some much-needed heat and more muscle relaxers on board, which killed the headache.

Story Time.

I am on the bus today, and a woman behind me is telling someone her whole life story. It is very motivational. She has overcome so much. Well done, bus lady. I am proud of you! 🙌👏👏👏🙌

Something happened at the bus stop earlier that made me chuckle

There were these two girls who were probably about 14-15 and the were literally throwing the worst insults at each other whilst fighting about a boy. 

The language coming out of one of these girls was loud and vile considering that it was at a busy, public bus stop. And I was sitting on the bench with a middle aged guy and a woman who was probably a few years older than me. They knew each other and they were talking about this girl and how terrible her language was and we were all just disgusted by how gross she was being. It was totally unnecessary because they were fighting over a boy. 

Well, while this was being discussed, I clocked this young guy around the same age who kept edging closer and closer to the “adults” with absolute terror on his face who had not interacted with anyone since he got there. 

He approached us nervously and skittishly. 

“They’re fighting over me. I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t even like or really know either of them, I just want to go home.”

The poor kid was terrified but I loved how the three adults on that bench were literally like “come sit with us” and he sandwiched himself between myself an the other lady to protect himself. 

Teenage girls are awful man. It was funny to remember.

There's a fucking. ICE raid. On the bus in Tampa. They asked for ID/papers of everyone who looked Latinx (everyone else just got verbally asked if they were a citizen) before letting us /off/ the bus. So they were basically trying to trap and detain people. So, be careful around buses if that is a danger to you because now they are collaborating with Greyhound
