I've been riding buses for years because I'm poor and don't own a car, so here's some advice on riding public buses if you haven't before:
Have your payment/swipe card ready before boarding! Don't be the a hole who holds everyone else up looking for your swipe card
Know your route and fare ahead of time. Most times this can be found online with info on where to get weekly/monthly/discounted swipe passes if that's your jam
Get the bus before the one you think you need. If there's a breakdown/backup then you'll be thankful to be early instead of really really late
If your bus is early to the stop one of two things are going to happen: the bus before was running late and the entire ride is going to be cramped OR your bus is actually early and the driver is going to take a longer break than usual eventually
Don't assume the bus will stop if you are sitting down at the stop. I've seen buses blow past little old ladies and children because they didn't move to get up or flag down the bus.
If the stop you're at is requested, the buses four ways will probably be flashing and will stop with or without your imput
If the wrong bus looks like it's going to stop for you, a little wave off or throat cutting motion or exaggerated shaking of the head is polite so the driver can keep on going.
BUS DRIVERS TAKE BREAKS. I don't know why this surprises all new bus passengers. At some point, a driver will pull to the side of the road and get off. They may or may not announce why this is happening. Drivers take breaks when they are due for one or the bus is ahead of schedule. If you're running late, that's not their fault
Sometimes, one bus on a route catches up to another one. This leads to some fun enrichment to your life because the results of a late and early bus meeting are always interesting. Sometimes one bus will transfer all of its passengers to the other bus which is logical, but I've also seen the two drivers just race each other stop to stop so there are no real rules. The most important thing is to listen to the driver if they make an announcement!
Are you going east or west? North or South? Uptown downtown? I can't tell you the amount of times someone has hopped on the right route in the wrong direction. Double check before you step
OFFER YOUR SEAT TO PEOPLE WHO MAY NEED IT ESPECIALLY ON PACKED BUSSES OR IF YOU ARE SITTING IN THE HANDICAP SPACE!
Seriously be ready to offer your seat to pregnant people, people with kids, disabled folks, elderly folks, tired people, people holding a lot of stuff, or anyone who seems like they need it more than you. The bus karma will equal out and your good deed will get rewarded in the future in some way
The general rule is enter at the front door, exit through the backdoor unless you're in the first few rows.
People getting on wait for people getting off. No one likes the person who pushes their way against the flow
If you're afraid of getting creeped on (it happens no matter what sometimes) and the bus is relatively empty, sit in the aisle seat and put your bag on the window seat until you have to move over for someone not creepy
The only people who have made me uncomfortable on a bus are white men so I tend to not sit next to them. Yes this is me leaning into my own bias. I will stop when they do
You are not better than the homeless people you share your commute with. The bus is for everyone
My favorite seats are the ones where no one is behind me because you have someone touch the back of your head one time and you're never the same
No one will probably tell you off for playing your music through a speaker but everyone will want to stab you
Headphones will not eliminate the possibility that someone will talk to you but will make it more unlikely
Don't fucking talk to people with headphones ???
You will get annoyed the third time you see a fight break out then wonder when you stopped being concerned
You have an inexplicable connection with the people who share your route. Most of the times it's sexual
No one wants to be on the bus. They would rather be at their destination. You are not alone in your annoyance so don't be a jerk because you feel like you're the only one that matters
Watch your fellow passengers to figure out how to signal for your stop.
The Best Buses Have Pull Chords!
The stop requested signal will only ding once so if someone else signals before you, you won't get the satisfaction.
Most people pull for their stop halfway between the stop before and the stop desired. Others do it as soon as the bus pulls away from the stop before. Just don't be the person who waits until the driver is at the stop
If a bus goes over railroad tracks, the driver will stop and open the door to listen for the train. This means that if you requested a stop, you need to request again because the process erases the request.
I normally make my way to the backdoor as my stop approaches. This is considered "unsafe"
Thank the driver either verbally or with a handwave when you get off. They just broke the speed limit to get you to your stop without killing anyone. That's more than a cop has ever done
I'm sure there's a lot more advice and some things that are area specific. Feel free to add your own petpeeves suggestions!
