Why Communications Seminar and Goals

I decided to choose this seminar, because I want to pursue something related to the communications field, particularly the advertising aspect of it. My dad and my sister both pursued careers in advertising, which most likely rubbed off on me. It is fascinating to me to learn more and learn how to apply and project effective communication skills. I am hoping to receive a more in depth knowledge of the field as a whole and explore the various components that comprise it. Gaining more knowledge will ultimately help me better decide if this truly is the path I am passionate about for a future career. I am looking to also enhance my understanding of communicating for my own personal and social life outside of academic structure.

BU seminar goals

Hi I’m Lindsey, and I am taking this course because I am very interested in exploring communications and also business. I have not really figured out what I want to major in in college yet but I know that I want to do something creative. At the moment I am interested in marketing, and I feel that I need the communication skills to be successful with business. I want to see if I actually am interested in marketing or the business field and I feel that this class with help contribute to my decision. I hope that in the next two weeks I will gain a better understanding for what communication is and how I can apply it to business and advertising. I am really excited for this class and to learn about communication!

Why I Want to Take Mass Communication

I’ve always had a love for movies, and recently I’ve gained an interest in how the general media, in addition to film, is able to communicate certain ideas and ideologies through their particular mediums. Humans have been communicating since our existence and it’s only been recently that the digital age is taking off and communication is becoming all the more different. I’m eager to learn how the modern and future forms of communication will affect people socially and psychologically in generations to come. I’m also intrigued by the basic theories of communication (e.g. how there is an encoder and a decoder, how information can be perceived differently) and how those fundamental concepts influence the types of mass communication seen on the internet and various types of advertising. To touch back on films and cinema, I’m curious to learn not only what the filmmakers and artists give their audiences in the ways that they do, but also how they do that, within the boundaries of a given narrative structure. I’m really looking forward to this class :)

Why did I choose to attend this seminar?

At first I hesitated a bit about what course to take during the afternoon session, since I generally have a broad interest in engineering, but also life sciences and quite different areas such as communications and business. I am enthusiastic about life and about learning. Academically, I have a passion for sciences but also for the humanities. So after choosing abnormal psychology, which was something that immediately aroused me interest, for the morning seminar, I decided to throw myself into something I had never experienced before. Therefore, taken by curiosity, I decided to take mass communication. So getting to the objective of this post: WHY did I choose this course? I took this seminar because I wanted to try something new, that I had never done before, but in the same time I wanted to see if maybe this topic could be one of my future studying subjects or a more in depth study by my own. What do I want to get out of it? I hope that at the end of this seminary I will know general and more in depth stuff about mass communication. Understanding the needs for communication, the various categories of communication and perceiving how this act can change and influence our life and the lives of others.

Why this seminar ?

After looking at all seminars I decided to take this one because I took an introductory class about this and I really liked it, also because communication is the basic thing for humans to get along or at least to understand each other. I would love it if by the end of the seminar I could be more understanding of how communication works and more confident when communicating.

Why I’m taking communications

      When choosing the courses I wanted as my first choices for the BU summer challenge, mass communications was immediately the class I knew I wanted to be in. I am someone who is extremely interested in the way people communicate and why they do it the way they do. As society changes so does the way people communicate and in this day and age the list of ways to get in touch with people goes on and on. 

       There are advertisements everywhere you look and I want to better understand what makes an ad standout and why people respond a certain way to one and a different way to another. Also I am taking the morning business course at the BU summer program so I think that this course is able to go hand in hand with that and knowing information from one will better me in the other. When making a business or even being an important role in one, communications are a huge part in if is flourishes or not.

        What I hope to get out of this course is some more information on the basics of communications in life and how it plays into a work environment. Communicating is a part of everyday life and this class I believe can improve those skills while helping to teach me new ones.

Assignment 1

I chose to take the mass communication seminar because I plan to major in communication and want to learn more about it. Another reason I am interested in the course is because of my photography and graphic design skills. Though I don't plan on pursuing graphic design as a career, it has been a hobby of mine for a long time. Last summer I even attended a Syracuse graphic design program. Before and after this program I am working as a social media coordinator for a charity called Dreamyard. I look forward to the class and I hope that it will give me a better understanding of the communication field and a better idea of what area of communication I want to major in and the resulting job opportunities from that major.
