The Rialto Theater on Main Street in Bushnell, Illinois opened in 1925. Once the pesky blue law prohibiting Sunday movies was overturned by voters, the S.E. Pirtle Circuit built the Rialto, which was remodeled in 1950 and again a few years later to accommodate wide-screen features. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1965 but alas never celebrated its 50th.
The top two photos were taken in September 2025. The third view, circa 1982, comes from cinematreasures. The bottom street view, circa 1930, is an edited copy of a photo from the Western Illinois University collection.

I honestly think about Aaron "Lilly" Bushnell all the time.
1) I can't believe it's been 1 years, 6 months and 26 days since Bushnell's sacrifice and nothing has changed
2) Bushnell was brought up in a highly religious community that probably would have made it hard to come out
3) Bushnell been using she/her pronouns and used the name "Lilly" in online spaces for about 19 months prior to the self-immolation
There's a bunch of other stuff too but fuck it's just hard, could you imagine if they were still alive or if they never had to sacrifice in the first place? Who Bushnell might be now? It's a question that will always be buzzing around my head in the quiet moments, honestly. It makes you wonder who else might be different if they had only been born into different circumstances. It is an absolute tragedy.
Never forget. Ever.
