I'm listening to a gay fae romance taking place in a small US town and it's written well enough to be mostly enjoyable, but I did spend the first few chapters fighting to suspend my disbelief enough to get into the premise, because it quickly became clear that there were no POCs and certainly no Native American people in this story.
How and why Irish fairies are making incursions in a small US town specifically is never explained. Did they come with Irish settlers? They can't have always been there, because the fae being cast out from Ireland is a major world building point, but also our protagonist's witchy family was assigned this town to protect because there was a border with Fairy in it. But what's the mythological colonialism situation here? Did the Irish fae come with the Irish settlers and taken over from pre-colonial myths? Or have they always been there? If they had always been there, surely the Native peoples would have created their own ways of protecting themselves.
It became clear fairly quickly that the author has clearly never considered any of these questions. They wanted to write a fae romance, they are USAmerican and clearly want to set the story in a small US town, so just mesh those together and don't think about the wider socio-historical implications.
