She covered her face with her hands and doubled over in the chair in what looked like pain. Nick winced and rose in haste to round the desk and take her warm hands in his own colder ones. She wouldn’t look at him as tears poured down her cheeks and her breaths came in gasping spurts. Nick stood up and just hugged the sobbing woman. Her head rested against his stomach and the whole story tumbled out quickly and as coherently as the poor woman could manage.
“Oh Nicky! It was awful! J-John and I…we were arguing and screaming and swearing at one another…” She tried to stifle the rest of her sobs but continued as Nick rubbed her back with his good hand soothingly.
“He just kept screaming ‘Get the hell out! Now!’ and I…I just left…entirely…I stumbled back to Diamond City because I can always count on you Nicky. You always fixed everything and made it okay… ” She straightened up at the last of her words and rubbed her eyes. Nick took a hesitant step back. She sat there quietly for a moment eyes darting around the room anxiously. Nick folded his arms across his chest, after thinking over story he jolted in the spot he stood. His expression one of shock and surprise as he stood frozen in place by a sudden realization: She called him ‘Nicky’ and said ‘He always fixed everything’. He gazed over at her alarmed by her seemingly disoriented body language. After further inspection, he realized with confusion that it looked like she’d just woken up for the first time since he’d met her 4 months ago. She tottered awkwardly as she tried to stand and Nick rushed forward.
“Take it easy, relax Silver-You’re i-” Nick was hardly through with his cautioning remark when Silver placed her index finger to his lips. He stopped speaking as she lowered her hand. The smile playing at her lips was familiar and caused his heart circuitry to hum in his chest.
“My name is really Jennifer…” She said quietly as she leaned up placing her lips gently against Nick’s. He was suddenly acutely aware of just how much he smoked. She sighed dreamily and pulled away for a brief moment.
“If you’d relax I think we’d both enjoy this reunion a little more…” Her words were gentle but firm. Her blue eyes looked up at him pleadingly as her fingers wrapped around his tie and pulled him in once more.
