Yellow-rumped Warbler Setophaga coronata
12/21/2025 Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, California
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Butterbutt), Setophaga coronata. The “Myrtle” form has a white throat, and the “Audubon’s” form has a yellow throat. There is also a darker “Goldman’s” form with a white and yellow throat.
2 (?) yellow-rumped warblers, I think?
affectionately called butterbutts by many (。>ᴗ< )
Today’s pixel art bird of the day is the yellow-rumped warbler, which are known affectionately as butterbutts! This photo was taken on a crisp, grey day by a local lake. I loved how the grey and white blotchiness of the barren branches complemented the gray of this little bird.
Yellow-rumped warblers are another bird with many looks! The species, as of 2024, has four subspecies with different appearances and ranges. The one I have created pixel art of is the Myrtle’s subspecies! Myrtle’s and Audubon’s were lumped together by the AOU in 1973 due to the hybridization zone, where the two populations successfully interbreed.
P.S. You can find this pixel art bird as a sticker here. :)
My first warbler sighting of the year! Yellow-rumped warbler from yesterday at Rosetta McClain Gardens
It’s spring again in Tucson, and the yellow-rumped warblers are everywhere...
This is a transition time,
there is a lot of coming and going right now. Migratory birds are passing through on their way north and there may be fun surprises if you get lucky. Here are some current regulars. And a screenshow from a Yellow-Rumped Warbler. He visited today and was so well-camoed that the camera did not catch him. It was sheer luck that I checked.
There's a kind of bird that is nicknamed butterbutt by birders 🧈
