Premiere: Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench - African James Bond
MusicMap is proud to present the opening musical gambit from mysterious Anglo-French duo Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench. From what we can gather via various tongue-in-cheek snippets and their somewhat eccentric Facebook account, they met fifteen years ago via a funk reggae band they managed and produced, but have now combined their powers to offer “a bizarre and beautiful look at life in London from the eyes of an Englishman and ears of a Frenchman”.
Their debut track – revealed here today – is ‘African James Bond’, a sprightly creation built on layered guitars and snare-heavy beats, providing the perfect nest for the half-sung, half-rapped vocals of Rebel ACA (if you must know, the ‘ACA’ apparently stands for ‘Anti-clockwise Attitude’). “[It’s] about a friend Dave who became deeply depressed suddenly”, Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench explain. “He lost his song, he lost his soul – and in the process we lost a friend. It was a song to reach out to him in his darkness to “pick up the mic” again.”
We don’t know whether Dave has heard ‘African James Bond’ yet, but it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to resist its spirited appeal. Meanwhile, the rest of us wait to see what these masked crusaders have lined up next…
‘African James Bond’ is taken from Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench’s forthcoming album Sunday’s Cool, set to drop in Spring 2018 on Buttercuts Records.
