There's a bit of Carl Sagan's Cosmos where he plays a series of beeps in increasing prime numbers and it bothers me to no end...

Exactly! There’s no rhythm among them and no rhythm within them, and while they are terribly terribly useful (and some of that utility comes straight from that ugliness!) ‘useful’ and ‘pretty’ are partially independent evaluations.

#primes aren't my favorite type of numbers but I do enjoy their ugliness#because like reasonably with such a simple rule you expect some pattern or shape but there really isn't one and thats cool#math#saying prime numbers are ugly is not really the same as saying you hate them?

Arguably, number theory almost can make them pretty by means of its proofs that primes are reliably without pattern or shape...

But I never found number theory pretty, either. :-P

yeah, number theory is just kinda bland, like some things prove about it are cool but it's kinda dull just dealing with whole numbers with fairly normal functions. weirder math is prettier and more fun                it is cool being able to share a bit of math with non-mathy people though so I always get pretty excited about new number theory results

...yeah, I’m the sad sack who always tries to teach them calculus, instead. “You think number theory is neat, have I got something to show you! It’s gorgeous, it’s profound, and it’s not as hard as you’ve been told!” (It doesn’t always go miserably, either: my wife took a calculus class just so that she could follow this thing that I burble about every so often.) But hell yeah on the weird stuff! There are perhaps maybe reasons that I find some Moriartys very easy to sympathize with.

Yeah, google priorities websites that a) have a lot of links to one another and fandom wikis cross link each other a ton and b) have a lot of google ads, which fandom wikis have a ton of. So it’s pretty rare for google to not prioritize a fandom wiki over others even though they are usually the worst wikis for a fandom

oh, that makes sense but also makes my blood boil. it makes all the obnoxious ad space and pop-ups even more frivolous. Like in some cases it seems like fandom.com wikis are only made to farm ad revenue and take advantage of SEO, regardless of the actual quality and veracity of said wiki. There's so many examples "alternative" fandom.com wikis being made despite there already being a more established, and more comprehensive wiki for that franchise. Sims, JJBA, Mario, Fire Emblem...

Like I get fandom.com being more accessible to create compared to mediawiki, but all the baggage it comes with with the videos and articles is just not worth it.

Like... ugh, it all just sucks, man.
