There's a bit of Carl Sagan's Cosmos where he plays a series of beeps in increasing prime numbers and it bothers me to no end...
Exactly! There’s no rhythm among them and no rhythm within them, and while they are terribly terribly useful (and some of that utility comes straight from that ugliness!) ‘useful’ and ‘pretty’ are partially independent evaluations.

#primes aren't my favorite type of numbers but I do enjoy their ugliness#because like reasonably with such a simple rule you expect some pattern or shape but there really isn't one and thats cool#math#saying prime numbers are ugly is not really the same as saying you hate them?
Arguably, number theory almost can make them pretty by means of its proofs that primes are reliably without pattern or shape...
But I never found number theory pretty, either. :-P
