Once upon a time, we discovered that our dear Rotterdam is full of so-called Contemporary art (Art from the 1960`s up until this very last minute). One rainy autumn night we met this 6 meter high gnome in the city center. As we thought, art is related to the combination of skill and imagination to create aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others (Britannica encyclopedia). We started our own interpretation of this piece of contemporary art. Is it a gnome, or maybe Santa Claus? Why is it holding a bell? And is that a lollypop, ice cream, dildo, a buttplug? Walking we continued our little discussion and predictions of the meaning of the gnome or Santa.
Because we are curious, we researched this piece of art. The statue actually represents Santa Claus, holding a Christmas tree. Aha, well as you see from the picture, a Christmas tree is the last that occurs to your mind. `Santa Claus` is complete by Paul McCarthy, exclusively for the city of Rotterdam. He is a contemporary artist, and this type of art is more socially conscious than any previous era of art. So actually the `Christmas tree` by plan was not suppose to look as that. According to the artist it represent a criticism on Western consumerism, it’s a symbol with the force and charge of a stretched middle finger.
As the artist was trying to be socially conscious, the people of Rotterdam were conscious about this piece of art and ‘Christmas tree’ in the right hand of the `Santa`. It received the nickname – The Butt plug gnome. It was moved to several locations around the city, due to controversies around the statue, as many citizens were observing sexual connotation around it. Finally on the 28th of December 2008, the 6 meter high gnome found its new home, the square Eendrachtsplein, within a walkway of statue project.
Stay tuned for more art in Rdam ;)
